Hi Guys,

I received an M16a vvt Swift Sport (2008 EZC31S) engine, happily put it in my car, without doing a compression test (because the wrecker told me it tested good @ 180 psi x4 cylinders) but he must've lied because after installing it I quickly realised it has a blown head. Coolant was coming out of the Exhaust manifold , went into the Oil sump and the cylinders. On the attempt to start up it popped an injector out! It wouldn't start of course. Probably because of no compression and now I'm hoping I didn't hydrolock the engine? and do damage turning it over like that?

Not fun. A lot of work for this result

So, my questions are:

1. Can I fit my M13a head onto the M16a block? Being a Swift Sport I'm paranoid that maybe the cams are different or something? My Jimny M13a is low kms 70,000kms too so I'd like to use it instead of paying for reworking of the M16a head. Are they definitely the same?

2. If I can, do I just swap in the M13a head, timing gear etc along with obviously new head gasket and bolts?

3. I've pulled the head out and the block/pistons look OK. Anything specific to look for?

4. Looking at the attached pictures please tell me what you think of the head and block.

Can one of the Conversion gurus please talk to me and save me from this nightmaringly disappointing swap. Please.

FYI The wrecker has refunded me just $400 to carry this out. Yes I feel like naming and shaming but I won't here

I've also attached photos of the blown head and the block. I'm no expert on what to look for to see where it's blown.

Thanx in advance guys!

I can’t comment on the swap specifics but yes, I’d put money on the swift M16 handing different cams. Yes you can definitely bend a rod by cranking a motor with liquid in the cylinders. And I don’t understand how an injector pops out while cranking unless the timing is out because that’s the equivalent of backfiring out of the intake.

Handing? I don't understand sorry. Did you mean to write having or handling?

So I now have the 2x heads next to each other and they look exactly identical. Their respective camshafts have the same numbers and markings and dimensions from what I can see. Also the timing gear looks identical as does the chain, and tensioner etc plus the timing sprocket etc look the same. Same Egr and water outlet too externally. I hope they're the same...?

The injector blowing off. I'm. Not sure yet but I think that particular injector was dead/dying because I notice on the block directly below it there's black goo... Black death maybe.

Too late. I took off the good M13a head tonight. It looks pristine of course.
I'm going to fit it. I don't have much other choices except dragging the M16a out again... The horror

Anyway. Here's the M13a Jimny head photo attached. That is how a head should look, not the mess of the M16a I got given. I'm putting this in and hoping for the best. Unless someone tells me it's not compatible.

So, is it?

There's no reason to believe the bottom-end block is cracked. It rotates normally and there was actually no leak coming from the engine block. The piston cylinders look smooth and the crank it turns ok.

The M16a bottom-end is the only thing I'm keeping and which is remaining now in the Jimny.

The M16a head was definitely blown when I received it. You can see that on the gasket. Dead head!

So I'm ditching the M16 head for my original head. The only thing I have kept is the M16a bottom end.

The only question I need answered is, will an M13a head run the M16a bottom end - it's from a 2008 Swift Sport
EZC31S

Please. Anyone who knows?
