Ok. Borderline noob questions.

About to order gears for my se416. Vic high country conditions and melb hard tracks.

3:1 seems to be recommended a bit, but 4.24 seems to be all that’s for sale domestically.

Why?

Also, what ‘crawl ratio’ should I be shooting for? So I can go learn things in a gearing calculator while procrastinating at work.

7.5r16 is goal tire size. Won’t go any taller than 5.125 diffs.
Currently manual, will be auto one day maybe (but tomorrow never comes so who knows)

My experience with a G16B LWB vitara with 5.12 diffs, AW-4 and 31's was that 4.24 was too low.

I believe Christover also found 4.24 too low with a similar setup.

Consider 4.24's are equivalent to 6.5 Sierra gears, but running 6.5 transfer gears with 5.12's and 31" tyres is considered far too low for a Sierra.

A good rule of thumb for crawl ratio would be to aim for around 60:1.

3.65X3X5.12=56:1

3.65X4.24X5.12=79.2

Why is 4.24 so common in comparison to 3.1 ?


My ‘logic’ was I want my first gear sitting roughly around where 3rd currently is, as it’s close but not quite.
Then 2nd will be good, and 1st stupid low.

The 4.24 puts it around 5th. Meaning I’d rarely use 1st to 3rd.

4.24 has been around years. 3:1 is much newer.
