Hi all I have a 2000 jimny with the 13bb engine. A couple of weeks ago I got in it to go out and it just truned over but didn't start. I checked all the fuses they are all good. Next I bought a new cam sensor still no joy. So pulled the timing belt cover off checked the timing it was all good. There is power to the coil packs but it's not getting a firing signal. The fuel pump is working and the injectors are working. Dose anyone have any idea what the problem is.

Got a check engine light on? There is a diagnostics plug on the passengers side near the ecu, follow the manual and the check engine light will flash to give you a fault code. Attachment: image_2024-09-21_091722852.png Attachment: image_2024-09-21_092003648.png A better way is to fit a bluetooth obd2 dongle and download the app "SZ viewer" and that will allow you to read faults properly and monitor the output of all the sensors. I have it on my android head unit. Given normal OBD2 scan tools don't work with early jimnys, this is a fantastic diagnostics tool.

Crank the engine and read the flashes without switching the ignition off - is it still a 12?

Q1 - How did you determine the injectors are working? Q2 - How did you determine you have power to the coils? Q3 - How did you determine there is no firing signal to the coils?
Based on what you're reporting this would appear to be the ECU itself, and I'm reluctant to condemn that. Does the vehicle by any chance have an immobilizer? Have you tried a different coil?

Yes it is fitted with a factory immobiliser I'm leaning toward this being the problem not the ECU

Factory immobilizers inhibit both spark AND injection, you say the injectors are working - this is why I asked what I asked.

Ok have had an auto electrician look at it he did some poking and proding and said it could be a fried ecu or both coils have shit themselves.

Are the mysterious gremlin that lives in my jimny strikes again. Well installed two new ngk coil packs and a known good ecu and still no joy. So it must be the immobiliser unit. Where is it and what dose it look like.

Immobilizers, ECUs & keys all have to be programmed to work with one another, you can't just swap in a "known good" unit unless you swap as a set - I posted the entire immobilizer troubleshooting section of the manual a day or two back.

Ok had the auto electrician here today it has him stumped. There is pules to the injectors on cranking and pulse to the coil packs but no spark and they are new coil packs just installed two days ago. He is going to ask other sparkys tonight and get back to me . Has anyone else had this happen to them and how do you fix it.

Ok an update. Still not going. Here is what i have done. New cam sensor New coil packs New spark plugs New TPS New temp sensor Had the ecu sent away and checked it's all good. Had three auto electrician's look at it all are mystified that it's not running. I have checked the timing it's all fine. So it's booked in for another auto electrician to have a go at finding the problem next week. This is very strange.

Had another auto electrician here last night. He could not find a reason why it would not start. There is power to the coil packs there is signal to the coil packs when cranking but they are not producing a spark. So he said the coil packs were the problem. So I got new coil packs this morning and fitted them. And still no spark they are ngk coils so not cheap shit. It has to be something else in the ignition system. So i have changed the coils plugs tps cam sensor egr and had the ecu professionally checked for faults. I have tracked the wiring back to the ecu and the main fuse box and to the key can't find any breaks or chaffing this is very frustrating. Anyone else had a problem like this happen? I would love to find out what the problem is any help would be great.

Serious question - how are you checking for spark? how are you checking for drive to the coils? This is a wasted spark system that fires two plugs simultaneously - BOTH plugs MUST be connected, BOTH plugs MUST be grounded, BOTH plugs MUST be good. Attachment: jim-ign.JPG This is your ignition system, IF you DO have power to the coils, IF you DO have drive signals to the coils, they will produce the high voltage needed for a spark.
