Hello all. Does anyone know the bearing numbers for the steering box in an '87 Sierra? I've taken the steering box apart and the bearings at each end of the worm gear have totally disintegrated. I've searched the group but can't find an answer. Thanks in advance.

I can't help with the bearing numbers, These boxes are not rebuildable (i.e the wear parts aren't replaceable) so few people go as far as replacing bearings.

Do consider that even with new bearings it might not be possible to achieve factory preload or even eliminate plate due to wear, especially if the box has had worn bearings for some time.

I got a number off the bearing race. Koyo ACS0304. A couple of those will do the job if I can get them. This is just for a non-registered 'beach zook'. Rarely gets out of second gear. They are rebuildable for sure. You can get rebuild kits from the USA but hardly worth it when you can get a new box for a couple of hundred dollars from India.

I have not seen a source for RHD rebuild parts, not have a heard mention of anyone sourcing these parts.

The factory service manual does not contain any rebuild information, only the procedure for setting preload. If preload can't be achieved the box is replaced as a unit, implying any parts source will be aftermarket and not SGP.

The full US kit includes Left hand drive gears. Smaller US kits included bearings and seals only so fit any sierra. The 2 bearings cost me $25 each from a local bearing shop. I didnt get seals but they would have been cheap. Rebuilding was quite easy really, once the steering box was out.

Yes I understand that but if the gears are worn bearings and seals won’t help.

My gears were fine. Bearings were totally collapsed. Just loose ball bearings rolling around. Probably had salt water inside at some stage. The gears wouldn't even mesh any more.
