I'm just weighing up the options of free wheeling hubs vs ADD.

I am thinking about replacing the std 4.88 diffs on my GV with 5.125 diff centres (bigger tyres and want airlocker) and free wheeling hubs from the wreckers, but I also noticed they have an ADD front diff centre as well.

Now, what are the pros/cons of free wheeling hubs over ADD?

Pros:
- More reliable - one less thing to break namely the little penumatic compressor
- Less wear and tear in the front diff as it is not running permanently
- ???

Cons:
- A bit more inconvenient - have to get out to engage the hubs
- ???

I'll add a pro

when you blow a CV you can still drive home

about the only other con is one more thing to maintain, not that its a big one

BTW when you do it, you need to leave the compressor in and plug the output pipe as the 4wd light will flash and be silly if it cant build up pressure, that may be a con as well depending on how you look at it

you can probably bypass it but we never looked at it when we did Bruces

Have had free wheeling hubs of my GV for around 2 years now and I think they are great. No front CV's spinning all day when on the black top. Have got front air locker in it and all is great. If you are going to put air locker in front make sure you get diff off Vitara cause ya don't need shift on the fly (I guess you already know that)

And for another gumby question.

So it's more reliable to run free wheeling hubs then ADD, even for mildly modded Suzi's (this is assuming a mildly modded Suzi will have less chance of breaking things)?

If you blow a CV when using ADD, can you still limp home, even in 2WD? Or if using free wheeling hubs then I take it you can run in 3WD then.

no you cant drive on a broken CV, the potential is there for it to really munch up and turn the wheels and the car off into the bush at speed

you can undo the drive flanges from the hubs should you need to drive it but you need to keep away from dust and muck cause your wheelbearings are open to the world

Sorry, is this for ADD or for when using the free wheeling hubs?

with ADD

with freewheeling hubs you just turn em back to free and select 2wd
