Hey all -

What sort of bearing and seal is meant to be on the rear output of a sierra tcase? As i was tightening up the flanges, I noticed some play when the flange was tight.
I pulled it off, and then noticed the seal doesn't meet the shaft, and the bearing isn't sealed. If I am correct, this will allow oil to escape, right?

Questions -

Is the rear output bearing meant to be sealed?
Is the rear output seal meant to contact the shaft?

I have noticed though that even with the nut done up, there is still a bit of play in the flange - I reckon it can slide about .5mm back and forwards. Normal?

Ha ha yeah now back to the serius question... I can't remember there being washers behind the flange nuts, are there supposed to be?

No washers, but you have to really tighten the flange nuts, bolt a bar to the flange to hold it while tightening the nut.

My coily case had washers, and so did the 1L case i replaced it with.

All the ones I have pulled apart have washers. Big fat ones, about 4mm thick.

Hmmm - OK I went to Boltmaster and got some washers, but they don't fit over the splines, so are useless.
This is harder than I thought.

I have a burr and a pretty fast drill that will do the job - I am just at a loss as to why it was fine before these new gears went in, and now it isn't good. It is even the same shaft, same flange, same nut.
There was definitely no washer/spacer when I took off the flanges - :confused

is the flange moving on the splines or the shaft itself moving?

I sorted it out -

I AM A DICK HEAD AGAIN.

I left the spacer off the end of the shaft.

It is all back together properly now, and in 1hrs time will be bolted into my truck.

This thread is destined for the gutter. First we thought your flanges were loose, now the Doc needs to look at your nuts.

The 1.0lt Sierras used a plain nut with washer, while the 1.3 N/T, W/T and Coily should have nuts with a large skirted flange as part of the nut. These nuts do not need another washer. Either type is interchangable, but the plain nut must have a washer, or the skirted nut just alone.

Actually, my coily had the standard nut and washer.

Having new dramas now -

I cannot get the case into position with the twin sticks and cradle on it.
I need to remove the top flange, remove the twin sticks, install the case and cradle (mighty kong), reinstall the twin sticks, re-install the top flange, then the jack shaft.
THis is going to be tricky!
