Ok so I am told that Coily fuel tanks already have an internal swirl pot to hold fuel for a high pressure EFI pump.

What is involved in fitting an intank EFI pump?
Will the pickup, pump and sender assembly from an EFI vitara fit?

Has any one successfully butchered the standard Coily sender/pickup assembly to hold an intank pump?

Although the tank in my Coily has taken a few beatings, it might be easier to put an intank pump in it, rather than replace the whole shooting match...

G'day paulv, here's a couple of photo's of the coily tank that I removed from my car. In the photo you can see the swirl pot sitting inside the tank . Also in the other photo's you can see that the coily has a seperate port for the pick-up and sender. There would be no interference as the sender is in it's own space and the fuel pump would be contained within the swirl pot. Pretty sure the swirl pot was because you could get fuel injected models overseas - no point making two tank types.

Yep, very very very easy to do

The Vitara EFI pump bolts straight into the coily tank. The biggest issue is the high pressure line from the pump will point backwards (it will only bolt in one way in the tank). I just got a long piece of high pressure EFI fuel line crimped on by a hydraulics shop, and run it in a large sweeping curve around to the fuel filter location.

Just be carefull if you tank has taken a beating, the pickup sits rather close to the bottom. I need to get myself a bashplate before I destroy an immaculate tank

I had assumed the pump / pick up bit was combined with the sender.


So actually, I will need to find a complete pickup and pump at a wrecker, not just buy a replacement pump by the looks.

How much did the pickup/pump assembly cost, for those that have had to buy one?

Just for interest, I looked in my 2009 Bosch electric fuel pumps catalog, and the Bosch part number for a replacement Vitara pump (pump only) is 0 986 580 093.
Has a flow rate of 90 L/Hr and operating pressure of 250 KPA
Same part number for all 91 - 98 Vitara ET 1.6's

I payed $100 for mine. I had more trouble finding the pump assembly than I did finding a coily tank. I think you could get one cheaper, I ended up getting mine from one of the most expensive wreckers around as I was annoyed with looking around.
Brand new genuine from suzuki is $1200

My coily tank was $150, that included being delivered by courier to my front door from newcastle to Brisbane.
Brand new genuine from Suzuki is $800, and they have them in stock in Australia believe it or not.

Putting a rock through the fuel tank could come close to writing the thing of for insurance purposes!

The Suzuki specialist wrecker here in Adelaide wants $175 for a EFI Vitara pump and pickup.

Ouch.

Might have to make some phone calls interstate.

Sorta looks that way. It doesn't really hang down any lower. It's much wider and it fits up into the gap from the body lift though. Decent gauge plate for the bottom too.

Obviously you can feel it when it's full, but I put it in when I installed my 1.6, so it's still better with thelarger tank than it was with the small tank in the 1.3. In anycase it's not full for too long... then it's no different than the original tank.

The tank is a Longranger for a coily. It was ordered with extra capacity (created by the body lift).

My tank has an external pump. It's off a VL - bit overkill I guess, but cheap ($20 2nd hand off Ebay) and will always be available in Australia. Longranger may be able to do one with provision for an internal pump.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say how much the tank was... a tad under $800 I think. But I'm building up my car for a long trip, and I wouldn't be able to carry enough jerry cans.

800. Ouch. But then again it is a neat looking solution to the shitty capacity issue with the stock tank. And I am sure it meets all the ADR requirements etc.
If someone had just spent 30-40 K on a landcruiser or patrol, $800 on a bigger tank wouldn't seem much. But 800 in my old coily is a third of the value of the car.

I had better get on with trying to find a cheap intank pickup and pump assembly from a vitara....
