My mate rolled his 2003 Hilux the other month, and bought it back off the insurance company. He has airlockers fitted into both diffs.

My mechanic tells my both my current diff centers are in pretty bad shape.

I was thinking of offering my mate somewhere around the $1500- $2000 mark for both diffs, drive shafts and his air compressor, and fitting them to my car - that fixes my current problem, and upgrades to airlockers which i was already thinking of doing.

So far my pro's/con's list looks like this

Pros:
Stronger driveline/diffs - sierra won't put much strain on it
Wider Wheel track - more stability
Lower center of gravity - more stability
Repairs (by replacement) both diff centers
Upgrade from no lockers to air lockers
?? Upgrades Braking with hilux brakes ??

Cons:
Put more strain on other parts of the car - transfer case, gearbox... where is the weakest link now?
More weight in the car - unsure of weight difference though
Requires Engineering prior to being registerable


Can anyone add to the list, or give me more information on what i've already listed? I've never done this before, and want to get all the info before i make the offer to my mate. last time i was talking to him he was looking at trying to rebuild the car and get it working again... (only real problem with the car is major body and panel damage - mechanically should be fine)

A 2003 Hilux is not live axle it is IFS so it is no good to you

anyways, the lockers only got fitted about 12 months ago, but if theres going to be that much work involved, then i'll just stay with sierra ones and fix em up. Might have to pull my diff centers out one day and have a good look at them. Need to have a look at my rear uni joints too, its starting to rattle (about 3 days after changing my front uni joints...)

might hit you up shep for some diff bits when i work out what i need... never played with diffs before, but thats half the reason i bought this car, to learn mechanical type stuff...

as 2stroker said though mate that any standard Hilux 1998 onwards has IFS independent front suspension. so it wouldn't be like a normal Hilux diff you see on other sierras. unless t had solid axle swap before hand.

For the money you would be going to spend to buy the hilux diffs and then have them fitted by somebody, you'd be better off buying two new rear arb air lockers and compressor, double tough front axles, and have your centres rebuilt at the same time everything is being replaced. Should be able to pick up the air lockers and compressor for around the $2k mark or a little over, and double tough axle for around $600 - $800. To get your centres rebuilt, it's not that hard, but shop around as mechanics rates vary from workshop to workshop, but if you can, stick to someone you trust even if it costs a little more, because I've unfortunatly been in this trade for 20 years now, and have seen a lot of half assed work performed by so called licenced mechanics.
At the moment, with the aussie dollar being worth around 92 u.s cents, you may want to try and price the parts from the usa. You find it'll probably be cheaper than buying local.
