Does anybody here have the 3-Door 09/08/07 Grand Vitara? If so do you have the owners manual handy?

I'm about to buy a new 3-door, and the dealer has thrown in some 18 inch alloys for free (leftover from a 5 door Prestige GV), the overall ride distance is about the same (see link below for a size comparison). But im a bit worried that despite it being covered by warranty on the sales contract (I made him write it), it may actually be outside of the manufacturers allowable dimensions (and cause issues down the track), and id need to find the owners manual to confirm that.

225/60R/18 vs 225/70R/16

Note: There are basically no 225/60/18 4WD wheels on the market (I saw just 1 vaguely 4wd tyre), and the factory only offers 16's, so I have my concerns, however its hard to turn down $1200 worth of free alloys!

How wide are the rims? Yes, you will struggle to find anything 4wd in that size

IF you intend 4wheeling, tire wall hight is the key, big wheels mean low profile, small wheels mean high profile.

High profile is good. Low profile is for bitumen road 4wds

Definately agree, but I figured it would be 12 months before I did any real 4WD'ing, so I could use the bigger 18 inch road wheels till then.. but not if its doing damage to the car.

How would you check something like manufacturers maximum range of rim/tyre, is this an owners manual thing, or something else?

It won't do damage to the vehicle. If you have something written from the salesman then keep hold of it, just in case there is any query about it down the track. If you fit a tyre that has the same rolling radius then you'll be fine.

Cooper apparantly does tyres to suit 18s, i'm pretty sure they are the same size. They're the cheapest in that size but are around $300 a corner.

Do that, but a sale`s man at a dealership CAN`T say what is covered by Suzuki, him writing it make`s the car yard liable.
Your speedo will be out making the ecu think funny thing`s, & the Abs & Esp run of the same speed sensor, can cause fault code`s & all sort`s of STUPID shit that pisses of a tech when trying to diagnose a " FAULT" that may not be there.
The ecu uses the speed sen & numerous other`s to calculate load on the eng & adjust fuel & timing accordingly.


Short way of saying above. Get the std wheel`s as well.

P.s I highly doubt that he is "giving" you the wheel`s.....

The 18's were a last minute offer he threw in, as we were close to buying, but ready to walk away still. So whether I take them or not.. the price is the same.

Its a tough decision, ill see if I can somehow wrangle both.. end of the day, I will need to swap back to 16's when we head onto sand anyway.

We have the 2008 5 door GV and have been told by ODA1 that the biggest tyre you will fit without having to chop guards is a 245/75 R16.

this is gonna throw ya speedo way out and effect the above mentioned. We are looking at getting something like a 245/70 or a 225/75 size tyre

Whilst on this subject, does anyone know if the fitting of larger tyres impact the ECU? i.e will it alter the fuel economy and or traction control system?

Looks like I'll be sticking to the std rims and tyres. I'll probably replace the suspension with a 50mm lift when the warranty runs out.

If you go up a size & run lower psi than you do in std tyre's you won't have any dramer's, but if you go up in rim & tyre's your in trouble.

So stay same rim's & you can go up a size or 2.

I had a 3door 1.6 with 20inc wheel's complaining about no power.

I explained he was a DICKHEAD & to please remove those ludicrous rim's & see how it went after that..

Thanks again. That clears up the confusion regarding fitting larger size tyres. I'm trying to wear out the current set so I could get a set of 225/75/16 which should give me another 10mm clearance to clear larger pebbles.

Btw, which Suzuki dealer do you work at?

I have seen them with 245/70's , if your car is out of warrenty do what you want!! If it in, make sure you have std ish tyres on when you take it in for warr issues.
