Will be building a trailer percificaly to tow behind the LWB Sierra soon as the 6x4 box trailer i have atm is very heavy with long drawbar on 16" 6 studs. Will serve dual duty as general box trailer for firewood etc, and hopefully for camping gear with a fold out tent at a later date.

Obviously weight is an issue, so what have you guys built yours on? Was thinking 5'x3' on a 40x40x 2 or 2.5 frame with 50x50 RHS drawbar, same track as the Sierra running std 15x5.5 Vit or Maruti rims (already have both these) on 215R15 AT tyres, with shackled springs and maybe shocks. I want it to be strong enough to take constant dirt road use, but still light enough for the 1.3 Sierra to tow around.

Also, what hitches are you running ofroad. The std 50mm ball obviously has its limitations.

Yeah, thought about alloy but seen to many alloy truck bodies develop fatigue cracking over rough roads. Steel is easier for me to build too.

I understand the ease of manufacture, the fatigue bit, you cannot really compare a high load very stiff suspension like that found on a truck with a trailer built for a suzi.

I'm not sure if he detailed it much here but back in the day on outerlimits he detailed the offroad hitch he used. It was a greaseable ebay item I think that had really good range of motion.

This is the only picture I have of mine at the moment, but its pretty much exactly what you described.

40x40 frame, 1.6mm sides to 450 depth, sierra width on standar rims, 50x75 drawbar, 5'x3.5' and 175kg total weight inc tyres.

Tows great and carries way more than it legally should.

Need to stick mine on F100 hubs and stock Zook rims yet ... currently on 14" Ford rims.

Think carefully about which way you want the rear to open and the clamshell top to flip. Mine is designed so I can pull off to the side of the road and set up if need be - the camber on the road keeps the rear swing gate open at 90 degrees (hits a chock at that point) and the clamshell also opens away from the road. We get up from the non-cantilever end using the mudguard brace and mudguard as steps - can store our shoes on the mudguard too that way

75x50x2.5 RHS drawbar with 50x50x3 EA chassis
2.1mm checkerplate floor (smooth side up)
1.6mm sides, 450 high
4 leaf slipper springs, spring over axle

Lockable swing door rear and lockable drop-down front tailgate
All metal zincaneal treated with gloss black paint over

Good thinking with the tailgate. Was half thinking about trying to make it both swing out and be able to swing down as well, depending on use.

Not a lot at the moment. The whole top swings up and away if I want access to the inside - generally get gear out from under that way before setting up the tent and don't need to get in again until we're packing up. Haven't stayed in one place for long yet though so can imagine using the front tailgate in that case. It's useful having the option though - moved a 3 seat lounge + 2 recliners in one trip with the front gate down

Need to fit some jerry can holders to mine though to get weight back over the axle. This is what it looked like when we first left Perth ... took all the arch out of the 2" OME rears!!! Had to get some +50mm spring hangers made up in Exmouth to get the rear off the bumpstops

I remembered where my trailer pics were







5 x 4, made from standard light duty box trailer stuff, but I doubt I will be doing anything hardcore towing a trailer so would rather save the weight (tag says its 150kg)

One day i'll stick a rooftop tent on it but I rarely use it cause a swag is easier so wont be for a while.

Something I had been thinking about that would be good is one of them roofrack mounted awnings on a pivot that lays over on the opposite side of the trailer, so it tilts up to a decent height and you can roll it out as an awning for the tent, or out the rear
