Ok so I'm replacing my rear bearings and seals.
Just need to know something.

Reading through this thread and he says watch out for small spacer washer, between brake plate and bearing.

So are the bearings in my pic like a closed bearing or is that my washer in the wrong spot. Cant see any other washer? Unless its tucked in the other side of the bearing?

yeah thats right. make suer u have the seal point outwoods, mine was backwoods (prev owner) and caused a MASIVE bearing fail!

That small spacer is on the n/t ( narrow track) sierra's, the w/t's have it built in..

That most definately is a WT bearing,

as long as the seperate spacer from the NT setup was removed (which it appears to have been done) you have no worries.

Just in future, always buy the WT bearings so you have the inbuilt spacer, or you will need to source a spacer seperately as it doesn't come with the kits.

& don't forget to put the backing plate on BEFORE you fit the bearing's..

would there be any negative effects if the backing plate was modified so that the bearing could slide through the centre of it? so you don't have to remove the brakes to get the rear axle out

yeah the backing plate holds it in , to stop it from sliding out whilst driving ..

Freaked out that i was going to have to grind off a perfectly new bearing. I made a special tool that I could use in the press to "pull" the new bearing off.
Its a shame it doesn't fit when there is a backing plate on there, other wise that would be the best way to get them off. In this case tight is not nice.

I doubt I will the use the tool again. If any one gets too excited like I did and pushes the new bearing on without the plate, give me a bell. Ill send the tool.

1 litres can do this, the americans like to mod the backing plates and run the 1 litre axle retainers so this can be done

Is the w/t seal different to a n/t. Just that my bearing seems in pretty good shape and can't see any major problems with it.

Think its the seal thats causing the diff oil to leak.

Any pics on the forum of some seals or any info is greatly appreciated

its usually the bearing gone that makes the seal leak , but unlike front wheel bearings where you can grab the top and bottom of the tyre and feel play , you usually wont feel this play on a rear bearing , but if you jack up the car , and put both hands under the tyre and lift the wheel you will usually feel up and down movement.

ohh and the seal is the same n/t and w/t..
