Hey people,

Are all the GTI engines the same? Will a 1989 model GTI bolt in same as a 1992 model GTI would?
Thanks

I think there are three GTI engines, MK1, MK2 and Mk3. They are all the same block and will fit a sierra, if that's what you have in mind. You just need to make sure you've got the right ecu for the engine.

Check out redlinegti for all the info you need on Gti's.

Now be prepared for the Gti bashing that is sure to follow ;)

Thanks mate

Yeah I am aware of the mk1 mk2 mk3, I think the Mk1 is in the early models etc?
I am buying a complete car, SO I will have all the components there for me.

Before anyone talks shit to me about a GTI engine, dont bother, Im not gunna listen, and Im not gunna care haha. Eveyone has there own needs, not everyone likes the GTI engine and same with other engines. Surely cant be any worse then thse stock 1.3 L Carby engine.

89 will be a mk1.
It will make the least amount of power out of the gti variants.
It is compatible with the right angle drive adaptor, but you will have issues using the 929 dizzy cap for firewalls clearance.

I thought thats what I said.
mk1 CAN use the right angle dizzy drive (I use one on mine).
mk2/3 CANT use the right angle dizzy drive, but CAN use the 929 cap for clearance.

Not true.

An 89 GTi could be mk1 or mk2. As far as power goes there was no difference in recorded power output between the variants and besides which, none of them are gonna be making the same power they did 21 years ago when they rolled off the factory line.
The mk1s were actually a really good motor with hollow cams and some other shit that was dropped later on.

Easiest way to tell is if its the sqaure body and lights its a mk1 if its the later rounder shape its a mk2 if its an 89.

there are many other ways to tell mk2 and mk3 GTi's apart, but this is all on RedlineGTi for all to search for themselves.

All good info.
My bad. My '89 was a mk1.
I thought '90 was the changeover year.

about the motors.

mine is a mk3 motor, with mk1 injection.. it also has hollow cams..

it does however have a random watter nipple on the inlet that now does nothing :) that does something on the mk1
