wires coming from harness: white= pos, black= neg. Wires from spotlights are blue+brown. Am I correct that blue is negative? Cheers.

yeah it does if they are earthed as well

got a multi meter? see if both have continuity to the mounting bolt, lowest resistance is likely positive

or open em and see

Who earths their lights through the mounting bolt as well as an earth wire out the back?

And if I had to choose, I'd say brown was neg

ive seen heaps of lights have an earth lead as well as a metal housing thats connected to teh bulb earth

Thanks for the replies, guys, but terms like "I think", "if I choose", really don't give me any confidence. It is a Nite Stalker HID set, comes with wiring harness. All is connected according to instructions, but I still need to connect the Balck and white from harness to the brown and blue coming out of the lights. Could I do damage if I go "eany, meany, miny, mo?

Assuming it's properly fused - worst case scenario you'll blow the fuse.

I would work with brown being - (it is extremely common to use it as - )

I have played with few hid set ups that were meant to be plug and play but were far from it.. the little kid putting them together got the plug completely wrong...
figured it and got it cirrect with no damage to the kits.

In 240v land, brown would be active, and blue would be neutral.
In your case, it may not matter.

Open up the light fitting and see where the wires run to, and get back to us.

if you have 2 wires coming out the back of the light then you should be 99% sure that its not connected to the metal chassis of the light on either.

And lights aren't Polarity sensitive seeing as they are just a Resistor that gets hot

Are you asking a question about the way HID's Work?

Or Asking About wiring them?

I am not familiar with wiring HID's so i couldn't tell you

as to the way they work.

I fitted a spotty to my zook a real old 1 thats been in the shed for 20 years or so,, 1 wire out straight to a switch on the dash via a fuse then to the battery. simple .probaly illegal and my car will catch on fire,but it works .earthed through the mounting bolt on the bumper

I hope you only use your spotty for 10 minutes at a time. For the sake of $10-$15 get a relay and save yourself from a potential melt down

wired up spotties as per "good tech" forum advice. Harness installed as per instructions. Red wire from spotties on/off switch to right pin on one headlight (looking from engine compartment forward). Connected seperate earth from relay to left pin on light. Changed pos and neg (between spotties and harness)as per previous question. All to no avail - spotties not work . Will double check all issues over next couple of days/weeks and see whether I stuffed up somewhere.

Nope definitely not... HID's are not a normal " resistor " type bulb, they work more like a fluorescent tube/bulb, and the power supply they come with, could/maybe, be damaged by wiring it up with incorrect polarity... so best to right first time, and not guess...
