I know with the calmini kit the shocks have to be used upside down (to clear the diff) if that's what you are talking about

Inboarded means you bring the top shock mound inward(closer together)

do they have adjustment knobs? could they mean to install them facing outwards toward the springs like Mr Rocky instead of inwards like mine?

I've heard of people running the Ranchos upside down to avoid the diff crushing the shock housing without any dramas.

Rancho RS9000 shocks do not work upside down.

Many years ago 4WD1 (who called themselves something different then) recommended a fitment for my Gwagen - it was the same part number front and rear, with the fronts upside down. My spring maker was suspicious they wouldn't work so we bought one and dynoed it right way up and upside down. They didn't work upside down, for the reasons the OP posted. The valving goes totally whack.


For some reason, illiterate hilux owners started the whole "inverted" thing to describe rotating their shocks from inclined fore-aft to across the car like a sierra.

Yes I know its Lux and I know its snake racing but inverted shocks can also refer to inboarding, dont know why but they do. Have heard it being used for Sierra as well

Just thought I'd post so other people running the twin tube design shocks know they are not getting any use from their shocks if they have been inverted.

I cut my brake line bracket things off and moved the brake lines on top of the diff. shocks are loving it.(RS9000XL)

Id say its just become common talk as people say "i inverted my shocks" and describe it as moving them inward. So everyone has picked it up and spread it. But in reality, theyre two very different things.

no shocks was fine until i tried to tow my boat, they went back in fairly quickly then.

i actually didn't notice a difference in the way they work no matter which way they are mounted.

Will confirm this. Tested it last week. Running no shocks and upside down 9000XL's was the same. It was nice having the soft ride while driving but, hit the brakes, need to turn or hit a speed bump and it was horrible to drive.

And in the bush it made things very difficult to control with the constant bouncing around.
