When was the last time it was 46 degrees in Darwin?

I was commenting on Darwin and surrounds, not further inland. I understand Shep has only recently moved to Katherine.

But Sheps not from Darwin? And you did mention that you have higher ambient temps then Shep does... Which you don't.
I'm just confused on what your saying here gwagon.

Here we go. *sigh*
Shep upuntil recently lived on the coast, No? Elcho island, whilst some distance from Darwin, is likely to see a generally similar climate to Darwin it is at about the same latitude and also surrounded by water, no? Peaks about mid 30's?
I can't comment on how much experience Shep has with his current thermo setup in Katherine, where, quite rightly, you point out the temperature does get very hot, but I bet he's not climbing many steep low 2nd tracks for an hour or so at at time, at low vehicle speed/high engine load.
I was only trying to point out that not everyone's experience is the same or strictly relevant for everyone else. This is a big country and it's very clear that what works in one place won't work in another.
The assumption that many would make is that because shep lives in the NT he must have the best sorted thermo setup ever because of the local conditions. I'm just pointing out it might not be all it looks like on face value.
No offence at all to Shep - if it works, it works - it just might not work everywhere, or even in Melbourne.
Let's not turn this into a pissing contest about who has the most hardcore weather. It's only relevant as much as outright cooling capacity required is a function of ambient temp and load. We might well be able to see the same or greater demand on a cooling system here in victoria.

Wow If the sierra can't cool itself through ram air at 90 without the aid of fans, whoever designed that was a complete retard...

It most likely does WITHOUT a thermo blocking its way!

I prefer Thermos. But I never buy cheap ones. And I always upgrade the radiator too. This practice has not let me down yet.
As for fitting a thermo to a standard radiator.... I cannot comment, as I am yet to try it.

I agree with you on principle. But I always mount my G16's lower than the 'kits' allow, and that makes it impossible to line up the fan and the radiator shroud.

haha i am from katherine and only spent 2 years at elcho.
true story. i spent 6 years living at port macquarie in NSW and port was hotter then katherine
and katherine is colder then port. haha
the issues i had were all to do with going slow with no revs in a swb hard top sierra with a 8v g16
and the aircon on flat out.

How does a thermo fan block air flow ?
When i go below around 40k for extended periods my thermo will cut in, never above.

What's the PCD on the Vit clutch fan?
Or more to the point, will it fit an F8a?

They werent designed to be cooled with 'ram' air, they are a 4wd FFS not an F1 car

regardless of it being mounted on the front or rear of the radiator the fan blades are always covering a section of core, so that section even for the slightest instant is not getting any airflow through it.
Eventually you are moving faster than the fan blades are able to pass air, even with the extra flow they are capable of once you introduce the higher pressure 'ram' air in front of it so it acts like a big wall preventing more air through

Biggest flowing fan you could get to fit between the confines of the top and bottom of the radiator, even changed the actual fan section to one with more blades, still didn't work.
Sierra front ends arent designed to funnel air through a radiator, the radiator isnt designed to be cooled by just moving through the air, simples
Vitara radiator is a different story, its larger surface area grabs more fresh air

That all makes sence. And I assumed that because there is a larger radiator fitted to the vitara from the factory, that the G16 would require an increase in cooling capacity that a standard sierra radiator cannot give.
Another issue with peoples' use of thermo fans in place of engine or viscous fans, is that they remove the shroud to give room for the thermo fan.
Surely having an un-shrouded thermo is less effective than having a shrouded one?
Airflow volume, AND patterns through the front of a sierra would be suspect at best, so relying on 'ram' air is not a well thought out plan.

I dont reckon that kind of shroud is required with a thermo, the important part is the circular band around the blades is required to get the blades to pull air from in front and not radially.
My opinion is covering the core like that is restricting airflow once you are moving and forcing it through the fan opening or more likely passing air around
I like the idea of air dams between grille and radiator to get all the air coming through the grille to go through the radiator if you cant sjut fit a wider one
