So yesterday I was up at Lancelin playing on the dunes. I was heading up a big dune and when I got to the top a roo jumped out (it was early morning) so I turned hard right and headed back down the hill. My front right tyre dug into the sand and the back of my car lifted up, then my car was standing on its bull bar and then flipped further and landed on its roof. I need a new targa bar, doors, windshield And panel, and a new front axle (got bent somehow). I am a p plater and am new to fourwheel driving and I admit I'm not experienced. I've gotten myself in a lot of bad situations and I shouldn't be risking my life as much as I am. Anyways, I need your help. Should I claim this on insurance? I'm worried the premium will be huge since I'm on my ps. Or should I try and do it myself, and source the parts?
Insurance is definately the easy way out and my preferred option.. Haha because I'm slack.

Stuff insurance. Heaps cheaper to just get some second hand bits and bolt them on. It'll happen again so don't worry about the colour of the panels

The parts you stated are easy to find, And all unbolt off the body. My estimate would be no more than 1k parts from a wrecker to fix. (cheaper if your patient on here)Not including painting and doing it yourself. That would include a new front clip, window and frame, whole new B pillar, diff housing only etc etc

Definitely source the parts yourself and rebuild it, because like BlueSuzy said, all the parts you have said that are damaged are bolt on bolt off - the diff swap being the most difficult.

Nothing worse then when insurance companies write your Suzy off D;

parts in WA are a little harder to come by - but every now and then a whole vehicle comes up for wrecking - there was one not long ago - a complete NT hard top for $500 - all the panels looked pretty straight in the pics.

Have you even checked that your insurance will pay out? Playing around on dunes is probably not covered by your insurance.

Given the damage you have described, the insurance company will write off the car if you claim.

Fixing it yourself will not be that hard. Thats the way I'd go.

And in future, don't swerve for roos

MrRocky just fixed his up.....he picked it up rolled and fixed it up for a few $$$....even the colour on the panels matched

Id say go digging for bits on Gumtree and maybe give Pete a call at Suzukishop on 9350 5289....he should be able to help you out

As for the targa top....summer is comming so you may not need it for awhile which will give you time to save some money for a new one

Last time I checked, the seatbelts on a Sierra were attached to the targa bar...

Last time I checked, the seatbelts on a Sierra were attached to the targa bar...

Must of been a while ago, I heard they all attach to the door lock now

suzishop havent been able to get there hands on ANY sierras for atleast 6months Anything they do get is in to gooder condition to part.

you can always make a rollbar to go were the targa bar goes. an when u say u wrecked the front end, is it fixable? sure its not gona look prety but considering almost all of the front end of a sierra consists of flat edges temporary hammer work should surfice.

that just leaves the problem of a front axel. and doors, there is a bloke on gumtree that i believe wrecks sierras from home. look for sierra parts posted as being in balejura (or how ever u spell it) ask him if he has what you need.
other boys might be able to offer better advice here but. how interchangable are jimny axels and housings and shit with sierras.....

I was up at lancelin on sunday, unlucky mate
Repaired mine for a few hundred but got lucky with the parts.
I might be able to get you the parts but sometimes it can be cheaper to buy a sierra with a dead engine or a few parts missing and swap the good bits over and part out the rest to recoup some cash.

Guys thanks heaps for your advice and stuff. I agree that I should fix it myself, and really it's not that major. It just sucks because I just finished year 12 and was planning to take her to leavers in 26 days I hope I can get her asset roadworthy for then!
I'm struggling to find parts, I've been looking heaps! But a few links you have posted have helped a lot! So thanks guys! I'll keep you posted and get some pics up once the sun comes up today!

Just post wanted ads for the parts, then re-spray them when you get them and fit them yourself. Easy fix. If you are having trouble getting parts in WA and the local Zuk shops are ripping you off, try ordering some parts from over East where Sierras are a lot more common (QLD) - maybe try Want33s or someone wrecking one.

IMO, that is much cheaper than mucking around with insurance - you sound young and your excess is probably worth twice as much as the cost to fix the damage - not to mention a claim will probably add cost to future insurance policies. That way you can be certain your car isn't written off either - insurance parts and paint jobs are ridiculously priced.

Okay the thing is my dad has his heart set on doing the insurance thing, he doesn't understand just how easy it is for me to fix this thing. So I've got to convince him about that. But I agree, sourcing and installing the parts myself will be my best bet. But yeah I'm gonna struggle to get all the parts in wa unless I get a wrecking one and even those are quite hard to find!
How much to you think the Max price I should pay is to get it all sorted out? I know that's a pretty broad question...
I think I need some 4wd lessons or a few trips with some auszookers just so I can figure out the best way to drive the old girl!

Tell him it would be classed a write off, you will be down on money from the excess, down a car and worse off than before you had a car. I'm assuming you excess will be around 800?

Just get the parts and paint them matt black. Fit them on and call it good.. Repaint the new parts later when your wallet has recovered.
