just wondering, It's been suggested that the idle up switch could increase the idle, not for general use, but for use in comps. So as a stock standard set up, if you turn your lights on the idle will go the set idle speed eh? Like say 1500rpm? Might sound obvious, but just thinking it might be handy for comps, just turn ya lights on and we're powering on :D

Yeah i could just go try it tomorrow on my car, if i can find the damn keys, but anyway i thought i'd just post it here for general info.

here's a pic of the 1.3L carby idle up bit.

Which bit do we change, the top screw or the bottom, or both?

bottom screw

then you need to follow the vacuum line of that actuator down to a little solenoid, thats the one you need to power via a switch, you also need to make sure it has a vacuum supply to it from the manifold

the one with the wire is an idle up for AC I think, though I dont think any work anymore

you can also fiddle the wiring a bit and wire the power steering pressure switch into it, so when the steering gets loaded up it ups the idle to help you along

Well Casper's idle up is all working now thanks to Royce (again). It has a switch on dash. Idles when warm at 850ish, flick the switch and it goes to 1450ish. Just what I needed. Thanks mateeeeeeee. I'll give you another free months rent on my shed for that :-)

Took a little while to find this again! Surprised it didn't get much interest.
Royce or anyone able to give a brief idea of how I'd set it up for both the pump switch and a manual switch from the dash?

Pump switch as in compressor? All you have to do with it is give it 12V. Then the solenoid will operate and push on the lever connected to the throttle shaft which will bring the revs up.

If its a single wire solenoid just apply 12V to it through your switch. If it has 2 wires one of them goes to ground, the other to your switched 12v supply.

Sorry, power steering pump switch as Royce eluded to...

So pressure switch will need power, then dash switch and run both wires to the solenoid. Not being very electrical I'll just play around with it - sure I'll figure it out.

12V -pressure switch- idle up solenoid- ground

as well as

12V - Dash switch - Idle up solenoid - ground

so you will have 2 switch wires going to the solenoid

I always wondered what the top solernoid was for. It's interesting that all carbys had them air conditioning or not.
Does that mean there is a wire for a load sensor in the Sierra engine bays?

Now you have me wanting to find out how to turn on the vit TBI idle up with a switch. The idle up is controlled by a VSV and vacuum dashpot instead of a solenoid.

Thing is I think that 12v makes the VSV open which brings the idle down with vacuum, so I will need to cut power to get it to idle up. (If I have it right)

Yep I have idle up ... even have an in-cabin switch for it (kinda) - the rear demister switch in the hart tops kicks it in.

fail :)

to keep from rewiring the solenoid drastically

relay

87, to solenoid
30, to some kind of power
86, to power of some kind (both from the coil + will do)
85, to terminal on power steer pump and also tap off to switch

other terminal on switch gets earthed

I think it's the other way around. (Could be wrong though).
When I connected mine directly to the vacuum dashpot the idle rose by a couple hundred RPM.
I disconnected and blocked the pipe and revs are normal again.
It's a hassle cos I broke the little plastic bit that connects the two.

Will it work? Yes. Is it easy for non electrically minded people to understand? Yes.

Anti_fail!

Does the power steer pressure switch only have 1 terminal on it with the other side of the switch grounded via the pump case? Yes

Fail on your fail justification
