Hey people

I'm Adam from Townsville. I'm looking to buy my first car and I'm liking the Jimny. Currently I ride my bike most places and intend to keep doing so, the Jimny would be for longer trips around town and for camping and 4wd trips. A few mods I plan on doing are bull bar, 2" ? suspension lift, larger tyres, uhf, snorkel and roof rack. I would also love to do the conversion to m18a engine eventually.

I'm looking at a couple of cars in Brisbane at the moment.

05 "Z-Series" Jimny, 206,000km, $7,900
It has tow bar and roof bars
new clutch, o2 sensor, battery

04 JLX Jimny, 165,000km, $10,000
ARB Bull bar, OME 2" lift and steering damper, snorkel, custom rims

I'm leaning towards the first one, mainly because it is the 05 model with the VVT engine. From what I gather, this engine runs much better and is easier to upgrade to m18a. Is this correct? Not really bothered by high k's as I will probably do the conversion at first signs of serious engine trouble.

What exactly is the "Z Series"? Is that a new badge introduced in 05? is this different to JLX or just another name?

Since the car is in Brisbane, I need to get a friend to check it out and maybe pick it up. A couple of things to check for I've gathered from other threads:
"Death Wobble"
Rust in Jack compartment/ muffler/bonnet

Anything else to add?

I think the pre vvt would be easier to swap the m18 to, as the 1.8 wont have vvt. vvt may give you tiny better fuel economy

Jimnys do have wobbles. Mine doesnt. 99' 2" lift but with stock tyres. No correction bushes.

I also think any rust in a car that new stay away from. again, mine is 99' no rust and its been offroad.

They go much better than a sierra onroad. the 1.3 is quite zippy so you may not even want the 1.5 1.6 1.8.

If i wanted to do the 1.8 conversion straight away, Id be hunting for the cheapest 1st m13a. yr2000+ model,

Id still rather the m18 ecu as its programmed for the 1.8

Id also still rather the 4wd with the manual transfer shifter. 1 less electrical moving part to go wrong.

Nothing wrong with the M18 on the M13 ECU, it adapts its self pretty quick, Ask monkey how it goes with the rear locker on in the wet

You dont have any evidence to back this up though so its not helping the new guy one little bit

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought. The intention would be to get the m18 ecu as well but good to know it would work without it.

Yeah, I had only heard of the JX and JLX too. But another one I was looking at in Townsville also has the Z Series badge. They seem to have the same features as JLX, but I'll ask the seller if he knows what it means.

my jimny softtop was build in spain by santana, also europe samurai's (sierra's) come from there since 1993-1995

Nah not ebay. Local guy selling it through Gumtree. thought i'd snap it up. There certainly aren't many around.

They hit the round'a'bouts. Like any car, hit anything fast enough at the wrong angle, it will roll.

drewmouli, does the m18 make much of a difference to fuel use? I looked up the Liana specs and it still says 7.4L per 100. I'm guessing it would use a bit more in the Jimny though. How much did you use before and after the conversion? I've read that they generally get between 7 and 11L per 100, depending on how heavy your foot is, and the terrain.

I narrowed my search down to the 05 onwards because I much preferred the facelift interior. If I could change one thing on the whole car, I would have got myself the auto because the gear change/clutch action on the suzuki it truly aweful. But auto's are big bucks I think, I've only seen very new models with them.
