Driving style for sure. just watched the video and you have throttle why coming down off stuff so you hit the back side, wheel bites in and something has to give. its going to be you center or cv when that happens.

drop your tyre pressure and try using less revs. a set of gears will let idle up most stuff

Joe can make Sierra hub and cromo cv will fit outer but still needs to work out a inner
If he could make a slip axel with a uni on the inner that might work
Then he could make new stub axels to suit the uni bolt pattern

By the way. The only I drove it so hard then was because if the car had lost traction and slid into the hole I wouldn't have a vitara.
Very slippery rock and big holes lol

But the concensus with my friends is that the CV shouldn't have broken under that little load.
What is everyones thoughts? Should it have definately broken? Or is it what stekky said, just old CV's

look into the hilux IFS cv mod,

Locked vits break CVs. some people can manage to survive, but on average you will break them.

Yeah mate. I am currently in talk with a fabricator working out my options.
But no point in making a cheap weak point stronger and making a more exspensive part the new weal point.
Anyone know what other CV's may suit?

Yep unfortunetly, if thats the terrain your looking to drive in a vitara its going to happen. Whether often or not expect them to go.
I would be getting a sierra if that was the terrain i was driving.

people uprate CVs because they arent a cheap "fuse" part. If you drive hard terrain your always going to break something eventually, but cvs shouldnt be breaking as easy as they do.

as an example, i was at a club comp a few months back, we had a mix of sierras, LJs and Vits. the vits broke 5cvs over a weekend i believe, sierras broke 1. ljs none.

you might also consider not always driving locked. try stuff unlocked first, it teaches you to be a better driver. then lock one diff and try again, only if you really need to, lock the front, the less you used it, the less your going to break.

thats how i drive rear locker always gets the flick before the front but will always try something unlocked first and gears make it much easier in terrain where you will lift a tyre as everything happens slower ie you lift a tyre and feel it lift so can back off so your not on the gas when it comes down or if you have to be you can have the tyres turning that slow it doesnt matter anyway i think with the harder stuff im trying to drive now with out gears id be chewing through cv's every time i go out

Never seen a inner break
I pulled the cir clip grove off one when I did my widening mod before I welded on a spacer onto the stub axel

I have never owned a Vitara but is that video for real or is it just taking the piss, I'm not sure if I would have even engaged four wheel drive in the LJ for that hill.

The only reason the I put the locker on was because it took a lot of convincing to even try it. My mate in his patrol tried it unlocked and struggled a lot and he had bigger tires and a 5lt v8. And if you start sliding on that hill you'd end up in the ditch. Just a precaution.

2 stroker, can I actually see you try it in 2wd. I actually think it would make it. If not, we will have a vitara near by to tow you up :D

I had a run of breaking a few.

I tried a few solutions and don't really know which one worked but have had success with...

Adjusting the steering so full lock is not beyond the limits of the cv.

Removing the air-locker and running a lockrite.

Adjusting driving style so that I drive hard bits with the wheels as straight as possible.

Running two-wheel low range when 4wd isn't needed.

I don't think this is related but I did the passenger side into drivers side conversion to make it easier to change them and would you believe I haven't busted one since!?

Are you claiming these things are helping to save CV's? I can't see how a lock wrong is easier on the CV's than an air locker. As for using 2 Low, I'd be hoping that anywhere you could drive in 2 low you weren't in danger of blowing a CV of you were in 4 low.

the other things you pointed out were totally valid IMHO. Also, watch reverse at full droop/full lock. It's harder on the CV's than going forwards.

i can see a auto locker in theory has more give in it then a air locker but if its slipping then its not doing its job

How so? Have you seen an auto locker "slip" - they are incredibly violent on the axles when they do "slip".

I think to be able to unlock the diff when bound up, an air locker has the potential to be much softer on the axles.

I actually think an auto locker is harder on axles than a spool.

i said in theory there is a reason why i have a air locker not a auto to me a auto in the front would be acting like a tyre gain grip then loosing it then gaining agin suddenly to me on a high traction surface something would give in that situation and in a vitara that would be the cv

I'm not sure Steve. I blew a few in a row and then none for close to two years now. I don't know which of the changes made the difference.

I actually put the lock-rite in only because I had a 26 spline one sitting there when I did the diff upgrade. The airlocker was the old 22 spline (still haven't got around to changing it).

I think maybe doing the majority of driving in 2-low when possible is probably saving wear and tear on the cv's as they are not under load all the time.

In the end I think either locker gives you the ability to drive slow and in control which prevents the wheel spin that kills the cv when you hit the rock ledge that put it up in the air
