Well my new toy should be back on the road in a week or two! YAY! but with 30x9.5s on a vitara, obviously the speedo is gonna be up the creek, how do you guys go about recalibrating the speedo to be accurate again (or somewhere close) as mine also needs to be a daily driver through the CBD

i use my nav man. its more accurate than my speedo anyway.

yeah you can get it recalibrated, but by the time you have done that it migh work out cheaper to get a gps, that way it works no matter what size tyres your running.

i spent hours adjusting the little levers behind the cluster to get my speedo right. and its still not perfect. This is aparently illegal. and even now i doubt its accurate as i have changed gearing and tyres.

Hours of work to get it close or 60secs to attach the navigator to the screen and turn it on.


I know whats is easier.

Its all well and good to use a nav man but I believe if you have an injected Vit the VSS is on the speedo so it may affect that.

mines not injected either, and being a soft top in the middle of the city a navman (yeah i can pack it up easy, but that day i forget, well it'd be an easy target) plus i dont have a navman, and the little levers built for thrashing that'd be electronic ones only wouldnt it?

only way to do it is to adjust the gearing into the speedo, you can fiddle it to get it right at a certain speed but the odometer will never be right unless you change the gearing

well then pull it apart and start playing with the spring, you can get it spot on at one speed but slower than that it will read low and faster than that it will read high

sierra's have 2 levers and from what i got told you can adjust them both to get it pretty close trhough out the required speeds that are legal.

Um i use marks adapters in melb for my speedo calibration. Its sets it back to perfect! but did cost about 350-400 dollas

I had mine recalibrated by a cable and gauge specialist in Sydney. Cost was just over the $200 mark. They stuck my car on a dyno and worked out how much the speedo was out by, then built a little gearbox that fits in line with the cable and transfer case that rectifies the speed discrepancy. Having GPS is all good and well, but not really much help in Sydney when travelling through a tunnel such as M5 east or Harbour tunnel with speed camera's installed

I have the same thing, I heard you can get a gear to fit in your gearbox to change the speed, is this true

borrow a gps

get to 60 kph and put a white mark on the speedo face were 60 is
get to 70 kph and do the same thing etc etc etc

If you beleive this to be unsafe then get to 60 look at your speedo then remember what speed it is showing then stop. Put your mark on the speedo get to sixty check it and repeat the process.

Simple way way cheaper than gearboxs and stuff and iff you use a white paint pen you can scratch it off. Then you can go for bigger tyres and redo it.

Me and Jr Zook were throwing some ideas around about a retrofitting a stepper motor driven speedo with LCD odometer. I did some measurements and figured we could get it all to fit, found some steppers and ordered some displays but haven't got much further with it. One feature is to make them adjustable so no matter what tyres or gearing you run you'll be able to get the speedo AND odo spot on.

Don't hold your breathe though, we haven't even got a prototype together yet.

Got my Vit done today - Ratio Box (stepper) on the speedo sensor at the gearbox. Cost about $350, but all legal and legit, and now the engineer will sign off on the BL and tyres.

Can be re-geared to suit bigger/smaller tyres for much cheaper in the future if necessary.

atm i run a Baleno gauge. i go through a 60 speed camera everyday @ 60 on my gauge. No fines! but odo is prob out still.

Its a reverse sensor with a digital speedo.
Was thinking of ditching the reverse sensor and just using the speedo.

Wonder how accurate this could be though.

I use an acewell digital speedo. Fits perfectly into the round vent holes in my 1l dash. Uses a magnetic bolt on the driveline to measure rotation and convert that to speed/distance.

Always accurate, and self adjustable if I decide to change final drive ratio's.

Did you also hook up Tacho and Petrol gauge for that? can you see it clearly during a sunny day?

Tacho yes. Both bar graph and digital. And it's clear through the day (it was half the reason I chose the acewell).

Mine also has fuel gauge/indicators etc, but these aren't connected (yet).
