Could you mount the winch upside down and have the plate at the top then unbolt the motor and rotate it 180 degrees so that it was mounted correct way up. That's what we saying isn't it that way the winch still spools between drum and mount but in this case is on top and the motor and controls are still accessible

This is basically what I was saying, put the winch on a mounting plate, then flip the whole shebang and find a spot to mount it, fab your mounts so the plate which is the winch mount is actually above the winch. Imagine having a winch installed in a winch bar, then taking the bar off and flipping the whole bar with the winch in it. Yes you have the drain holes and controls issues but none of the spooling issues that are confusing the issue.

Those winches sound fast lads

That would relocate the drain holes as Elky mentioned but it would not help that the gearbox is still spinning the wrong way.

not once you put it on the passenger side

Mount the winch feet forward and with the motor on whichever side is convenient and position the fairlead so that the cable spools from the stock location so that the drum rotates in the stock direction (to satisfy the brake requirements) - this MAY mean that the fair lead will be above the centerline of the winch drum - in most cases the control lever can be "re-clocked" by removing the bolts & rotating the gearbox housing.

When the winch is mounted feet down, the main reason for not having the cable spool off the top of the drum is that the height increase between the top of the drum and the mount (as compared to the bottom of the drum and the mount) causes increased load on the mounts because of the leverage - you can eliminate this by mounting it "feet forward" - in this position you are no longer loading the front feet downwards and the back feet upwards - but loading all four feet "downwards" - this is the strongest way to mount, and is commonly used on ARB winch bumpers.

This is how I'd do it Tanshi if I had your problem.
