I'm looking to begin squezing some more power out of my Jimny G16B, Figured I would start with some extractors and then move to an aftermarket ecu, probs haltec. Who has extractors on their motor? Did It make much difference? I have always found extractors to be a gamble on the many cars I have owned with a little bit more power to them making a massive difference. Thanks all

I have extractors on my G16B but I never drove it with a stock manifold.
Do you have a Jimny manifold or a vitara manifold? I can't comment on the jimny manifold, but the vitara manifold isn't actually all that badly designed, except that it falls apart.
Steve.

I still have the Jimny manifold on my motor, as far as I can tell the heads are exactly the same on the g16b and the g13bb, correct me if I'm wrong. Probs same exhaust manifold. G13bb exhaust might be a bit more closer to the block? Due to room issues??

From memory, the jimny and vitara manifold are very different.
Have a look in my build thread - I have detailed pictures of the stock (broken) vitara manifold and engine pipes. They are a kind of tri-y design, unlike the jimny. Steve.

There is little point moving to an aftermarket EMS without any internal modifications ... eg high compression, big cams .. If you have a std engine, then your are best off with the std ecu by far...
If you want to squeeze a few more hp then try larger cams, maybe even up the compression ratio by either skimming the block and using a thin msl head gasket. If you up the injectors, remove the AFM and put on a pod type filter with a free flowing exhaust, then a properly tuned ems may give you a few more ponys ... The G16B is just not designed for high RPM, High HP ... so if you are able to extract an additional 10KW then you are doing well ....
you could always strap on a Rotrex ....

Thanks for the reply, but upping up injectors, or raising my compression, or a diff cam won't wake any improvement unless I change my engine management. For obvious reasons. Like I said before extractors make a small or decent improvement depending on the engine. I'm well aware how to get power from a motor, I own a 1995 Mazda Astina BA 1.8 ltr that blows 186kw atw that I built. My question was: who has fitted extractors to a G16B and what diff did I make to power. I'm running a g13bb ecu anyway so it's the wrong computer for the motor to begin with, hence an after market upgrade in the future. I appreciate suggestions on building a motor but I just want a quick basic answer. Cheers

Extractors will make the exhaust note a bit crisper but there will be no noticeable power or economy improvements unless you run it on a dyno.

Im running extractors - no difference ... If you get an after market EMS - Don't get a Wolf! - I'm running a wolf in my MR2 and it's a bugger to tune very few people can tune them .. (have a look at Dec12 Fast Fours and Rotaries, my car is pushing 400 HP from a 1.6) Haltech would be a good choice - plenty of good tuners out there ...

I got extractors no difference but my standard manifold was cracked that's why I changed.

Did you change the rest of your exhuast though?
Extractors on a restrictive exhaust, is still a restrictive exhaust.

I will watch this with interest.
I'm suspecting that I might also have a cracked manifold on my G16B, and may need to go down the extractor road.
What inspection process is involved, and are the cracks easy to pick up with just a visual inspection. I don't seem to have any engine symptoms at this point, just a very different exhaust noise from up front under hard acceleration.
Thanks in anticipation.

Usually you will hear the problem before you see it. A visual inspection is easy enough if you remove the heat shield.

Thanks for the info want33s. I will remove the heat shield and have a look. Might get someone to rev it up while I'm checking to narrow down where the problem is.

my old vit had extractors into 2 inch pipe, standard cat and huge muffler when i got it
muffler copped a few big rocks so got the giant muff trimmed and replaced with a 'sports' single chamber muff as i drove up the road it felt like it revved alot easier and pulled better from 3k onwards, also noticed a small improvement in efficiency
if you really wanna make some power from your exhaust manifold put one of them magic snails in

DOH, I have always known them as a hair dryer.
Ya gotta admit, some of the giant milo tins must make a lot of power hey, 1" pipe leading in, 6" going out, broom.

Thanks in anticipation. The manifold cracks I've seen haven't necessarily lead to noticeable exhaust leak or noise. There's also a gasket between the cast manifold and the two down pipes that may have failed - IMHO that would be more likely to create an audible leak than a cracked manifold. Steve.

Thanks Steve, I will also check this when I do the visual. If the gaskets are buggered, should i just go down the extractor road or stick with the stock manifold which will probably fall apart anyway. Extractors probably makes more sense I reckon. Kev.

I'd be surprised if the manifold isn't cracked, it just might not be the source of the noise.
I'd agree, I'd go to extractors rather than trying to sort out the stock manifold.

My next job is now organized. Extractors for the zook. and probably a new exhaust. Kev.

I haven't got an aftermarket EMS but I have been intercepting and tweaking the MAF (early cone type) signal to the stock ECU. The gains in low-speed drivability were quite noticeable by richening up the mixture slightly. Idle quality also significantly improved. Even though they may not be much max HP gain I've always wondered how much more area under the torque curve could be achieved over stock with an aftermarket EMS.
