So after getting to the Daly river (yep the one with the massive swamp gecko's) at 2am in the morning, Me and my mate had to get to the other side where everyone else was meeting up with us. We had a look at the crossing but no way in Fk I was going to walk it. My mate drove across it a few times in his cruiser and we guaged the depth and what I was up against. So we finally took the plunge and even though the Vitara made it through without a hick up, I got to the other side and quickly flicked up my bonnet to check if everything was in it's place.
The air filter was saturated!!!!! I quickly flicked off the engine and then took the air filter apart and even though the filter was soaked there was no water in the bottom pan of the air filter assembly. I have a weber with the air filter that came with it so you have a rough idea what it looks like.

So after cleaning out my underpants I let the filter dry out, camped 2 nights and caught a few Barra then I got hold of a rope and got my mate to skull drag me back across with my air filter covered up where I proceeded to pull a troopy out of the sand

So these particular events have gotten my brain ticking over again as to getting a Snorkel.
So from Carby to Snorkel..
I would have to get a hat of some sort so that I could run that off the top of the Carby. Looked around and they all look pretty expensive. Anyone know of any cheap ones?
I want to get a filter set up that's either inline oooorrrrrr I would like more to get a filter box from another vehicle and set that up. Was thinking something bigger than a suzuki one to allow for a little more air flow. Hoping I can pick up the box from the wreckers.
Was just gonna buy a Snorkel off ebay for $200. Seems reasonable and has a cool little thing on the side saying Vitara.

Basically I would like to have this whole thing done and dusted for about $400 but less is always better. How have other people set theres up and what cost's did they incur?

i went through the same thing with my sierra and the weber i had on the 1.6 motor....

I took the expensive option and converted it to EFI, then ran a stock airbox and a regular snorkel =) lol

Nah I like my little carby engine. Easy to fix.

I've been brain storming some more and was thinking if the weber carby's are the same unit but with different jetting, Would I be able to get a sierra air filter box and mount that in my vitara? Would it still allow enough air flow? and the such for this application? I know that people say that Webbers are no good with snorkels but plenty of people have done it.

This is the proper solution to the weber snorkel... however its VERY tall - no way it fits under a sierra bonnet with a weber on top of a 1.6 with no bodylift... i don't think vitaras have all that much room to spare once a weber is bolted on either?

My Original hat died so havent got that any more to modify.

The air filter on the Carby I have sits fairly high already. I'll have a look at measurements to see if it will fit. or would a stock sierra carby hat that is moded do the trick? Hmmmm

i have a spare sierra carb hat right angle adapter thingy f you want to mod it its gottom to go over the weber thrat which i'm guessing is square and not round like aisin/mkuni carbs?

Yeah i got that sports air filter thing. I'm not a fan of it. Its just crumbled and is letting in stuff that scary looking. I found a few grains of sand sitting in the pan around the carb a few months ago. Engine has been fine though.

Yeah was going very steady. Was just above idol in first low. Was talking to a mate today and he said it might be my radiator fan spraying a bit of water around and soaking the air filter. I told him to shut up and stop killing my new excuse for getting a snorkel lol

i was kind of serious... something like this with the lid cut to suit the hole for the air filter & sandwiched between the carby & filter base plate, fit the filter & fit the base over the top, with either holes drilled on the firewall side for it to breath or somehow attach a snorkel to it.

why not weld something up out of sheet steel will still be light if u make it thin enough, u will need to make it big enough so it can draw air from the space above the car when u smash the loud peddle

haha my food would now be sealed in plastic . My actual suggestion remains to find a stock one and mod to suit.

Although I am using a tupperware container as an airbox for my breathers and it is fine, I agree, use something else.
