For an accurate answer, I would ring the NSW road traffic authority.

If it is a motor that is not fitted from factory in that car it needs to be engineered. meaning if it is a different base motor.

When I did mine (recently) it does need to be engineered although its a minor thing. Cant remember the exact wording but its somthing like a v6 dunnydore would be a "conversion" but a vit 1600 is a swap as its such a small increase and its still suzuki and all but bolts in.
Dont quote me on the wording but you get the idea.

mine is engineered for the g16b.I showed him the engine mounts and the adaptor plate for the box.He barely cared tho as hes seen so many done and knows its bolt up.

Its on the report as just being replaced with 1.6 from vit bla bla.His main concern was that all polution gear was correct and cat/exhaust was good. Then commented on neat wiring. Then the partial blue slip for all the mods on the report were smooth sailing

Anything that came from factory ULP has a cat, 88 or 89 I think was the change over from leaded.

The reason Im asking is I have a vit motor that I bought of my hairdressers sisters butcher neighbour and all I know is that its NOT stolen and its now legaly registered in myt zuk.
But the rta have said find out what model its from and if they came with a cat. Fit one if it did but dont if it didnt so they have left if open for me.
Now I wouldnt take a cat out of a vehicle that had one but my 85 model didnt have one and its been left open wether I fit one I just have to say what year its from If you read inbetween the lines they have given me.
Normally Id just do it but with all the hoops Ive had to jump through (offsett on rims 5mm to much so 4 new rims etc) Im running short on cash

Not correct.

Depends on the catergory of vehicle and the relevant ADR it needed to be compliant with.

Many vehicles like 4wd's and commercial vehicles were exempt from certain ADR's when they were built, including Emmission Standards.

1986 was the changeover year from ADR 27 to ADR 37/00 and 1997 was when ADR 37/01 came in, then from 2003 they've been superseded by ADR 79/xx (euro standards).

So any vehicle built between 1986 to 1997 which was exempt from ADR 37/00, good chance it's unleaded, possibly even EFI and doesn't have a Cat Convertor and not required to.

Still doesn't help Nik out, but it's just to point out that an unleaded vehicle doesn't necessarily have to have a cat by law, depending on what it is.

Wouldn't say he was dodgy passing them before.

The RTA changed the goal posts on what's required to pass larger diameter tyres. My understanding is anything larger then 2" they now want an abridged brake test done on the vehicle as apposed to just a normal brake test. Once you look into whats involved in that, it's quite costly and fairly harsh on the vehicles tyres and brakes.

On the topic of cat converters..

Does anyone have, or can tell me if an 87 LWB sierra came with a cat or not? At the moment mine doesnt have one but I was planning on putting one in so I dont get fined, but if they didnt come with one then I wont waste the money.

Thsoe new laws I believe have not become effective yet because of the backlash of the 4wd community when they were announced. The state government was in talks with 4wd groups to make the law feasible to 4wd owners.

The abridged brake test thing was around before VSI50 raised it's ugly head. It's only one of those requirements of proving your brakes are still up to the task of stopping a vehicle with much larger tyres.

Some engineers are still getting around it somehow, whilst other just won't do it.

So if vits came out in 88 they probly all had cats?
I may have to do the abridged brake test yet to confirm my braking system works now if gone to lux diffs but we are trying to get around that.
