I have a whine coming from the gearbox or transfer case. i'm leaning towards the gearbox as the noise is from 3rd gear to fifth and it doesn't matter whether the transfer is in high or low range. Also when the you let the clutch out in nuetral the car moves forward slightly.
What are your opinions?

Mine lurches forwards when the clutch is let out in neutral too, no issue there.

put the car up on jack stands and then talk someone into laying under the car, then run
it through the gears and ask them where the noise is coming from.

Did it whine in 4th and 5th previously, then progress into 3rd gear whine too.

I would suspect the gearbox needs new bearings.

jacking it up and having it going might be a problem, because it has no engine or gearbox at the moment.
The whine is only just noticable in 3rd gear, but gets louder as soon as you go to 4th, i hvaen't had the car that long so im not sure if it was only in 4th and 5th

when the rear wheel bearings are stuffed they can sound like it is coming from the gearbox.

In that case, pull out the transfer case, split it and have a look at it's condition.
