iv just found my front diff in my grand vitara has a crack running through the top of the casing. can the diff be wielded up as a temporary solution until i can find a steel diff?



also dose anybody have a steel diff that is in need of a good home?

take it to any specialist welding shop and they can weld it up good as new

x2. It's out and clean so anyone with a bit of skill should be able to weld it. I would still consider it a temporary fix though

no it's alloy or something so it's won't weld without a proper alloy welder..

I reckon another alloy housing will be a heap cheaper than getting that welded up

a high frequency TIG or a mig with the right wire and gas....

ust make sure you run reverse polarity (put a ball on the end of your tungsten), high frequence, use alloy filler wire and a different type of gas to normal tig work. it's all in setting up as im sure it will cost you bugger all to geta shop to do it. but tell us how you get on

to weld aluminium you need AC high frequence.depending on your machine you dont need need to ball the tungsten. probably with the old transformer machine you will have to ball the tungsten. if yourr using a transformer machine you a Zirconiated tungstem (white tip)
if you got an inverter type machine you can use thoriated tungsten with a point ground on it. thats what i uses for aluminium.

i could also say thats its porbably cast aluminum so you need to use 4*** series filler. not 100% what it is but have a look on cigweld web site and it has the fillers and there uses.


but ultimatly i could probably just get a new housing

just a peek, im doing a bit of a overhall on her atm, redone the sump gasket, rear main seal, still need to machine the flywheel and chuck ina new clutch and there are a few extra things like a touch more lift, a new snorkel for the wet and finish of my front bar



and the only action pic i have atm, when i mixed up the air lines going to the diff compresor and was flying around in 2wd

well im going to try get the diff wielded as a temporary solution while i wait and see if i can find a steel front diff

does anybody know what kind of aloy the front diffs are mad out of? so i can get some filler wire to match?

i think it's a combo of melted down pootrol TB42 heads & heads from EA falcoon taxi's... :lol

i'm sorry to say this i chucked one of these alloy housings the other week, i would have gotten rid of it for the cost of postage.
