ive been pulling apart my next project and the gear box and transfercase are both caked in about 20 years of crap the old export spray degreaser wont cut it ive also used oven cleaner that works good just not on paint and plastic! now im just wondering what have you guys found and kept a secret to be the best to clean them down in cheers

Crazy Clarks sell a degreaser in an Orange and Black can that strips everything and does weird things to your skin, that and a gerni would do it

Diluted acid wash perhaps Not sure how it would react on metal, it would tear a new one out of anything

Yeah, Acid or Caustic washes will both attack the alloy.

One of those Gerni or Karcher pressure washers work well. Instead of putting detergent in the wash tank, use Kero. Works excellently and won't harm the metal. Just don't do it on the lawn or where the run-off will go down a drain. And if you've hired the washer, rinse the tank out with detergent before you send it back.

If that's too hard, do you have a Carlovers/ Aquarius carwash nearby with do-it-yourself pressure wands? They usually have a degreaser option on low pressure, but by alternating with the high pressure soap it can work well. Just soak the case in degreaser or kero before you take it down there.

KENCO SHIFT-IT.... Awesome stuff... Soak for 10-15 minutes then pressure wash and repeat if necessary.
Item will be sparkling.

Yeah but it is highly corrosive, so make sure it isn't on for more than 10-15...

last option take it to your local head shop and get them to dip it in there cold acid dip for a few mins. It will look good as new. But you will have to re seal the box afterwords.

There's 2 types of degreaser we use at work and thats gen solve and shock treatment. they both are pretty awesome. the shock treament being strongest. Dont spray either in a kero gun, it will leave you breathless. brings ali housings up like its been dipped at a reco shop. you can buy it in 5l,20l or 205s
