Hey guys,

I pulled the diff out to swap over the housings, but I'm kinda stuck on what to do next.

I can't seem to get it open.

Sorry for not resizing.

yes you should get the whole lot!!!!

the carrier is usually the part that fails on the alloy diffs.

then it should just separate with a few taps to break the sealant.

if you end up getting the steel carrier you will need to change the R&P over so you have the vitara diff ratio's in the steel carrier, this is the sort of thing i'd send to a diff specialist.

R&P = ring & pinion.... the ring is the big flat round one & the pinion is the little on that the dront drive shaft bolts to & turns the ring gear.

aka the gears n shit inside the diff!

what's wrong with your original diff centre?

joseph,

from my understanding the housing in the photo above can come from any model V6 manual GV (the auto's did eventually get the steel diff, but not sure on the year it changed), it's the pinion carrier that differs on the later GV's, i THINK it's 2002 & later that have the gay pinion mount.

yeah If I were to use the complete diff, I'd need equal length cv's and the diff would move over 1 hole on the diff mount. Right?

8O

ummm when was the last time you changed the oil in that diff?

8O

i'd be chasing down another 5.12:1 26 spline alloy front diff from a normal Vitara, send that & the steel carrier when you get one to a diff specialist.

I changed it late last year, it was fine It was was still dark red/brown, As expected.
3months ago I had a "mechanic" change it. They told me that there was a lot of water in there but obviously they just filled it up.

To think Ive done a fair few k's with that shit in there, It's fkn scary.

Seems like my little list of things to do just grew a fair bit.

Well I've decided to get the steel carrier and I'll be ordering an air locker. Doing it properly this time. See how we go.
