My starter is going clicky click
Even when i short out the positive and the switching terminal on the starter it will still go 'click', additionally sometimes i can hear the starter whizz around but doesn't seem to engage?
Usually it will wrok properly after 2 or 3 clicks depending on how cold it is

Ideas to fix this?

it sounds like it is the solenoid. I have never pulled a suzuki starter apart so i dont know if the soleniod is rebuildable. i would say pull it off and have a look see. my mates 80 series was doing the same thing and it was the contacts in the solenoid were worn. i welded some solder on the contact points and it was good as new.

the starter motors on the suzukis are a completely different set up to the landcruiser starters. the contacts can not be replaced easily.

and dominator you can buy the contacts in the landcruiser starter motors as a replacement part. they arent that expensive. i would suggest changing them them as solder is as hard wearing as what was original.

try wiring up a starter relay. over time wiring gets resistance in it. causing a voltage drop. so the trigger wire wont be receiving battery voltage during crank.

you will need a relay, some lengths of wiring and some crimp terminal

if your not sure how to wire up the relay it is as followed
pin 30 - to battery positive (i pick this up from the main feed to the starter motor)
pin 85 - to the trigger wire on the starter motor
pin 86 - to earth
pin 87 - to the trigger on the starter motor (where the trigger wire was)


i would be doing this first as it is an in expensive thing to do and works a treat. if it wasnt starting at all then i would suggest a starter motor

I did think of the relay trick but because it still happens when i shorted the terminals I dont reckon it's going to help at all

what terminals did you short??

The trigger and the positive on the solenoid...effectively giving the trigger as much amperage it wanted

well in that case i would either
A- replace the starter and wire up a relay

or

B- get yours rebuilt and wire up a relay

yeah solder was only a temporary fix for the weekend. have since replaced the contacts. I wasn't sure if the zook contacts could be accessed or nor.

it can be done.. but you have to pull the solenoid apart. no where near as easy as the nippon-denso units that the cruiser has.

i always replace it with a new solenoid
