Air lockers (ARB) are superior.

However auto lockers (Richmond Lockright) are cheap, and are effective. They are a bit suckful on road though, but it is tolerable.

Blocked exhaust vent on the solenoid? Or possibly gunk in the solenoid holding it open.

I'm sorry but the fact that you can no longer drive unlocked with an auto locker makes it crap to me! I'd rather have open diffs than a lockwrong. Air lockers give you both options :D

depends on how worn out your side gears are if you go the 1510 lockrights. Mine work nice and quietly as the side gears are not as tight as they would be if new. drives fine on the tar and lock up in the ruff stuff. the only down side i have found is the steering is alot heavier when locked and not as responsive on low traction tks.

I have dual lockrites and daily drove my zuk for 5 years. It always handled amicably on the road. The back was a bit tail happy under acceleration in the wet but I suspect this has to do with 31" muddies other than anything else.

There is a mild clicking sound at very slow speeds (in a car park for instance) but apart from that there is nothing very noticeable.

As for the detractors who say that a front lockrite makes it hard to steer grow some muscles or stop been lazy and get out and unlock the hubs.

IMHO, air lockers are not worth the extra money. $2000 can do a lot of other mods for a Suzuki :P

I can't justify the expense of a airlocker in the rear of my sierra. I'm spooled and that suits my use and driving style fine. It's easy to justify an air locker for the front though. Being able to steer on slippery surfaces is cool.

Hey Joe, If ARB make me some airlockers that fit 1 litre type diffs I'll pull out my Lockrights and smash them in a press! Until then they sure beat welded.

agreed... I've had them all:
Welded= crap
Lockrite=crap
Phantom locker(form of LSD)=crap
ARB Airs front and rear ONLY way to go.= The Best

At least then you can try different lines to drive the obstacles and if required use rear or front or maybe both.

PS with front and rear Airs you can still enter the stocko class comps and clean up the field to take home the trophy and Frozen chook.

well.....i am building some new fabricated diffs for kenn's lj (wider with coils)........so he might have the current 1.3 front and 1.6 rear custom made diffs to suit an lj up for sale soon..... :wink: (would like to see them go to a good home)

my vote goes to Airlockers.

i always wanted one in the front but after driving it in its current setup for a few years now i dont want a front locker on the grounds that it will make whats currently a challenging section of track much easier - and i prefer to keep it challenging, otherwise i have to go find harder tracks further from home and will have less people that would want to join me on a trip out.

you don't want a front airlocker?......you could allways leave the switch off....

a spooled diff is like welded except designed from the ground up that way.

That is it is always permanently locked.

As for people who say buying lock-rites is the cheap way out. I have too many other expensive hobbies and can't justify spending $2k for no gain in off-ability or on-road manners (especially not that my zook will not be my daily drive... once it is finally back on the road that is :-( ).

And there isn't currently an actual "spool"for a sierra diff, only a "mini spool" that fits inside the stock centre. You can get them from trail tough.

No doubt, if my car was a daily, it'd have an airlocker in the rear. If it's not a daily though, I think an airlocker is a waste of money for the rear.

Horses for courses.

hmmm mini spool price was pretty good on the trail tough site, how much work or difficulty is involved in installing one?

So why doesn't welding count? I bought a mini spool because I intended to use it in both a sierra rear diff and a vitara rear diff, which I have done. I've welded a bunch of sierra diffs and always had good results. Why is welding not an option if you are considering a mini spool? the effect is the same.

Cause 90% of people cant or dont have access to welding gear to do it properly vs the cost of a mini spool

another vote for airlockers here, pucker factor on a rocky side angle with a rear end thats dragging cause its locked is shit

im not considering welding because it sounds like a cheap and nasty way of locking a diff even if it is done by a good welder, etc. im not really considering a mini spool, i am just asking about the different ways people go about locking their diffs to try to get more informed about the subject. I am leaning towards air lockers, even though they cost a packet they seem like the best and most user controllable option to me, like I said I am just trying to basically pick everyones brain and see what kind of results people get with the different methods used.

Meh.... who cares where the rear is pointing? so long as the front's pointing up the hill it's all good - punch it! :D

I'm actually serious - I was taught long ago if the front's heading where you want, don't worry about the rear. There's something to be said for that. I do understand your point though, but I do drive a tray, so I have no bodywork to consider - I don't car what the back hits because it's swung around. (Actually, I don't consider my bodywork at all - another reason I run a spooled rear :wink:)
