I've had a bit of rust here for a while, but it seems its worse that I thought...






Any ideas what I should do with this?

cut it out before it goes to your windscreen hinge, which will then be harder to fix.

X2. and remember, the rust you can see is normally only 10% of the rust that's there.

Have you folded the windscreen and checked the cowl is intact under the windscreen?

You have a lot of work ahead of you.... I'd try and find every bit of rust you can anywhere on the car and weigh up whether it's worth repairing it , or chasing a better tub.

as mr G said, see if you body is worth saving, if not, you can just do a dodgy fix up...

or

set aside a full weekend, take the windscreen surround off, take the dash out if necessary so you can access it better, cut it all out, weld some plate in it's place and spray nasty chemicals eveywhere, like rust converter. weld as much as you can so you only have to use minimal bog to just finish it off.

i've thought of this for when mine gets on a bit... i think the best solution is to buy a sierra body and restore that separately, and once its done do a body swap. means the cars not off the road long and the job done would be of a higher quality seeing as theres no great rush.

it would however also be about the most expensive option! lol

Its gonna end up being a hole the size of a fist or more.... its right through. How'm I gonna bog that up?

My old man suggested pop-riveting a plate behind it and then filling on top of that... But it sounds a bit dodgy to me...

if the rest of the cab is shot, but still safe there is no reason you cant do this to keep the police off your back while you save for a new cab.

just tack it into place grid the tacks flat make sure ur new plate fits with with the smallest gap possible round the hole and the bog should fill in the small gap sorta like the pics but bigger by the looks of it

Mine is rusty on that corner, not as bad, but mine has mostly eaten floor and guards..

yeah i had it like that on my windscreen surround but not as bad was just as bubbly tho

yeah mine had bit most of yours look like its just surface rust think i was lucky cos it looked like someone done a bit of fixing it already where the rear bar for the soft tops gos was replaced before i got it

Most of mine is rusted through... I know this on account of the fact I can see the passenger footwell, and when I feel up behind the glovebox I can feel a good amount of rust...

thats sounds bad should be able to do it the way i said before its how i did most of mine

had the same amount in my old sierra and exact same place. Paid a panel beater $600 to cut, weld, bog and paint it up. looked better than what i could thats for sure. i did under the car and the sills etc where it cant be seen but that is a major eye sore if u get it wrong there.

Sorry to sound un-caring, but seeing that makes me feel better about my LJ

Mate I can't weld very much, my front bar fell off my LJ in the last comp I was in ; but I would definitely give it a go (as opposed to leaving it), I am the lord of procrastinating and putting stuff off, but get into that ASAP!!!

Hmmm, that will learn you not to leave a rust spot to long, as it spreads very quickly, i talk from experience, learnt that the hard way... actually thats not a bad idea to patch the hole... only other option is to weld a plate in... or use some fibreglass, but you will need access to get underneath the hole... unfortunately there is no quick, easy and cheap fix for rust in that position... good luck...

If you can get your hands on a mig then all thats required are some tack welds. It's not really to had, just cut all the rust out, cut some sheet metal to size, do heaps of tack welds around the plate, grind down and put a little bog. Then make sure you prime top and bottom and it should be good for years.

He said to leave her there and she'll be all done by Thursday. $250, not nearly as bad as I thought...

That's pretty cheap, is he going to plate it up properly or just jam some bog in there...

You should get him to fix any other little spots you find while he's got the paint in the gun or see if he will put the left over paint in a touch up tin for later on.

Pics once done, thanks! I've got some rust under the windscreen rubber on my hard top that I'm not game to touch ... if he's any good I'll be paying him a visit!

No painting, thats just for welding it up. He'll be leaving it in primer...

Ok, well I just got her back from the panel beaters, and he did exactly what I asked, i.e. weld it up and leave it at that. He also found the closest matching paint he had lying around and stuck it over the bare metal to protect it until I get round to bogging and painting it. And he kept his word on the price, $250, for the three spots of rust that I found.

Yep, I can't complain. The best thing was he just fit me in there and then, no waiting!
