hey guys i have a 1996 jx efi vitara, i have compression, i have dead on timing, spark, new plugs, fuel, injectors work, all plugs and wires are plugged in, i bought this thing with the cylinder head off, ive had the head reco'd new head gasket and done all valve clearances, air flow meter is attached, what am i missing?
the car wil turn over with the key but will not stay running, will not idle, if we do manage to get it to idle, its with throttlebody wide open, but never runs more than idle speed, if just got the shits with it and sent it to a mechanic but to keep the cost down, what can i tell him to do/check, so i can finally drive this thing

i might clarify my origional post, all things up top have been checked, but cam keyway has to be up, othrwise cam is rocking on wrong cylinder as firing order is 1342, i have tried all suggestions posted, nothing will work, car was running, bloke i got it off did he welsh plug in the head and kept driving the thing untill it was so far mixed (water and oil) that he couldnt get it going, so he pulld it apart and thn i grabbed it.
ive done the head gasket got a reco head (maybe thats the problem, will the thing work if its got a different head?) done it all correctly, and it just wont run more than 400 rpm WITH AEROSTART, and throttle full, mechanic sais timing is perfect, checked fuel, spark, compression, and valves, car cranks but thats as far as it goes, if bad earth it wouldnt get that far i guess, comp should work as everything else does,
im asking so i dont have to pay like 40 hours for a mechanic to find something so dam simple, as its probably just that, simple, any help is welcomed,
cheers

nothing, thats where mechanic has put it, so that cylinder one valves are all closed so it fired (compression stroke), its wierd i know, but its theoretical, hes tried cam in every position conceivable

nah nah its good was referring to fuel pressure question,
more fuckin around today revealed injectors had power but no pulsing, did a bench test on the dizzy and its perfect, so im re-assembling the car and sending it to an efi specialist mate who recons he can figure out whats wrong. im just praying its the last mechanic i have to send it to and no more payments :(

in your first post you said injectors work , but now they dont work ?
i had a similar prob in a baleno that the injectors wouldnt work post crank , turned out to be the air flow meter dirty ... cleaned it with contact cleaner and bang fine again...

yeah mechanic said he checked em, i think what he meant was he checked that they had power, i dont think he check if they were pulsing until today, and turns out the aren't, so we'll see what efi specialist sais. hopefully its goodnews with a cheap fix

after i did the bench test on the dizzy, it must have dislodged some dust or whatever and car was put back togethor ready to be sent to efi specialist and i decided to give it one last crank, and bam it ran like a champion. bit of a clean up and paid some bills and its in my back yard with a rwc
