Just went to start redzook, and the after the first go, something started spinning real fast, guessing it is the starter motor, but while it is retracted.
I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

So (because my multimeter is at work) would it be the solenoid that is stuck, or a relay somewhere that is the problem?

pull the little wire off the solendoid and if it keeps going its probably the solenoid

Is it easier to replace the noid on the starter in the car, or to pull the whole thing out?

nah you need to pull it out cause there is a fork and slidy thingy in there

If the starter stopped spinning when you pulled the little signal wire off, then its most likely not the solenoid, as thats just a signal wire. If the solenoid was jammed then it would remain spinning, regardless of what the signal wire is doing. Its most likely something else back down the line, which really could only be your ignition barrel.

It stopped spinning when I pulled the battery cable off.

I then disconnected the trigger, reconnected the battery cable, and it started spinning again.

It is the noid.

Sweet as. Its weird that just the motor spins without 'throwing out', could be a stuck relay with broken fork, or cracked solenoid causing internal short.

I was thinking they may be designed like that - You don't want it getting stuck on and throwing out at the same time...

I rang up my local parts mongers, they said they have a universal noid, does this sound right? Is it a common part?

hell no!!!

I doubt anyone would list it as a seperate part, would all be new starters only

If it is, you can get another one from a wreckers. I know some lancers have the same starter as the sierra's. but most likely wouldnt want you to pull them apart..

I took another spare to my autolecky, and he tested and cleaned it up for me, so I should be able to just put it on and hope.

You definately can get solenoids separately. Ive gotten one for mine and so has Jayson. You have to be careful though, the parts catalogue isnt exactly clear so its best to bring in the solenoid to compare.
