Can anyone recommend a good place to go to get diffs rebuilt. Backlash never seems right. Need it done asap and need new gears aswell. probably 4.57 or 5.38's with new bearings.

good luck in finding anything over 5.1's (1.6 Vitara diff's) you can get 4.6's out of the 2.0 vitara.... you will need 2 fronts. i have a 4.6 front that i'd sell for $300 + postage.


not sure about diff shops in newy tho.

I think john murphy runs out of Kurri and I have heard excellent reports about his work, the others are known to be expensive.

- Manual transmission factory has been closed down for years.

- Newcastle gearbox and diff are a scam. Charged me $700 (for labour only, I supplied all parts) to rebuild a front diff centre (got the lot done because it needed a pinion seal). They gave me the diff back with no oil and no driveshaft connected. Their excuse was the housing was bent and they couldn't get an axle seal to stop leaking (it didn't leak prior to giving it to them).

- Promac do great work and now get my dollars every time. Although be prepared for them to take a while if they have a buildup of contract jobs, as walk in customers are a second priority. Although if you're putting in 5.38 I doubt it's a daily driver anymore, so timeframe shouldn't matter.

i like promac, i've dealt with them for other things and they have been great.

What about the guy down the central coast that built them about 12 months ago?

He was good but alot further away and don't really wanna go that far if I don't have to. He was expensive aswell. The backlash has never seemed right always seemed to have alot of play. Really noticed it wen putting a mates spare diff in that it's so firm. Those ratios are brand new gears from the states. I don't want second hand gears as i fear they will fall apart like my others. Yea this is the daily driver.

Will be interested to see what it's like doing city/highway driving with such low ratio's.

I'd love the crawl ratio of those 5.38 nitro r&p gears. I considered them a while back when I was having trouble sourcing replacement 4.09 maruti gears.

I was always worried about how it would go onroad, with 6.5's and only 33" tyres.
I didn't want to be doing 5000rpm cruising to the shops

I'd say I'll get 4.57 because with 6.5 transfer gears it's pretty low already

Do you have an auto-locker? If you do, there will always be a bit more backlash than feels normal. The pinion/crown wheel will be set-up properly, but there is also free play between the roll pins and clutch plates.

Air locker shouldnt exibit any extra backlash than an open diff. I do all my own stunts (I rebuild my diffs, t-cases etc etc ). Off Topic - I did get your message about the diff the other day. I havent checked that phone for a while, i usually use my work phone these days and i forget to check the otehr one. Sorry mate.

Speaking of the nitro diff gears.

Has anyone used them here, how do they rate?

I am considering getting a set of 4.57s because its taking too long and will cost very similar to source 2nd hand ones.
