Has he had the tranny out recently?

Sounds like he's got the connector for the reverse switch connected to the 4th gear switch.

I wonder if the EGR kicks in when he's reversing :P

NFI, didn't realise it was a Vit. Fairly likely though.

Sounds like the switch is picking up the fourth and reverse gates, might need adjusting? Unless something has broken or is heavily worn.

On the Sierra they are on the top of the 'box between the shifter and the bellhousing, I can only assume that on the Vit they are going to be in a similar spot. Might be a bugger of a spot to get to?

I'm just guessing here as I have never played with these before but some switches are threaded in with a lock nut. Just a guess as fourth and reverse gates are close together. Hopefully you won't be pulling the box out again!! You might be able to pull out the gear lever and see down inside too.

There should only be 2 switches? Just unplug them & swap the plugs & you're done. Easy to test if you've got the right plugs.

The 5th gear switch I have been told in called a " Top over Top" meaning that when taken from 4th to 5th it goes into a sort of overdrive and tells the computer it will not need as much fuel.

As I say this is just what I have been told....

I'm pretty sure its to activate the EGR (exhaust gas recycle), which allows some of the exhaust gas to be vented into the inlet manifold. It's an emissions thing.
