just wondering if it is possible to convert a suzuki super carry van to 4x4 using sierra bits and peices, i realise there would be much welding and stuff but i have an inkling to do something a little different as well as a shed full of parts, the suzuki shops here in perth seem to think it cant be done, i would love to prove them wrong.

Why would you want a gay looking van, then convert to 4wd, to jump gutters?

The front guards which are half the doors and floors because of the van configuration are small.

I've seen the odd 4x4 carry for sale up here. Not very common at all.

I'd still like to own one though. I reckon you could get some lift under it and get stock sierra 26's under there with some VERY skillful panelwork. Not sure the result would be worth all the effort, but thats for you to decide really :? 8)

i got a welder a grinder and a fridge full of beer, anything is possible
personally i like the idea of having a stupid looking van pissing along the beach or tracks past 50k + larger 4x4's
now converting it to 4x4 is one thing but making it go well is another challenge all together.

You mean an early van with leaf springs????

Okay you will probably need a frontLJ diff cause the offset pumpkin of the sierra may be in the way when you try and move the mounts in. Or spoa for extra stability ;-)

Also the rear tailshaft would be Uber short
Keep the standard engine box but just slip a sierra (flatter)or LJ transfer (smaller ) in.

The early vans had rack and peanut steering BUT its like a steering box as it has an output on one side. Hard to explain but its like a steering box but rack and peanut type steering. would be easy to adapt to the steering of a LJ/sierra

Less typing more doing with lots of pics. CHOP CHOP

Dont let anyone say it cant be done. It can be done, its just a matter of skill and planning.
Without actually seeing one, maybe an easier method would be to use a mid-mounted engine configuration with the engine, gearbox and transfer facing backwards, then use sierra axles and flip the centres? Its a world of possiblilty. Just do it, and take plenty of photos.

PERFECT!!!

Suzuki cappaccino frontcut!!! 660cc turbo with transaxle gearbox and diff in one assembly :D Slap that in the back of the van and make an excellent 4x4. Only problem is.... no lowrange :?

Looking at the pic I think I want to build one myself! Best of all it looks scarier, less stable and more ridiculous than my LJ. The three qualities that make the LJ50 fun.

I had a 1975 L60 Carry trayback.... Same as van just tray instead.
It had leaf rear and strut front suspension.
It definately DID NOT have R&P steering.... It had a box and several links before the wheels, similar to early LJ20/50/80 setup.

Fitting 4WD would be a bloody big effort for no real gain.... Import factory 4WD utes and vans are available... Just buy one of them.

But the import ones aren't high and ridiculous like the one in the photo. By the way can the imports be regoed in QLD and do they run any fancy or lower ratio diffs?
