As my GV is 8 yrs old I decided to replace the cabin air filter. Instead of getting reamed by the dealer with a genuine filter set I bought a cheaper set from the US.

It is a FRAM CF8726A filter. It has activated charcoal and baking soda which is meant to absorb odours etc. It was $40 delivered.

Here is the comparison. The FRAM is on the top and the old genuine is at the bottom

As you can see the genuine has many more pleats, but the FRAM has the charcoal coating (the black stuff). The genuine has a plastic frame holding the paper whilst the FRAM uses cardboard to hold the filter paper and hence isn't as stiff.

The size was correct and was quite tight to fit the air filter cover back on so I guess it's sealed well.

I haven't tested it yet for performance but will update when I do.

As soon as you open your door/window you breathe outside air..

Do you sit in traffic all day in a high polution area like the Japs?

I have A/C... I like to use it. Nuff said.

The amount of crap trapped in mine @90,000kms made me realise how much it actually caught.A lot.

My road car has a pollen filter for the HVAC air. (Subaru) I think it's a great idea. I can choose when I drive along with the window open. I can't choose the quality of the air the cowl vent is pulling.

Oddly though, there's no noticeable difference in the amount of dust the interior seems to collect between the cars I've owned with and without HVAC filters.
