I 100% agree with you there... it's a mission.

Thats what I love, but, as I go out by myself 99.9% of the time, if I fuk up and am hung up, it would be really nice to bung her into 4wd, flick a switch, drive a few feet, flick the switch again, out of 4wd and away. A lot of the time I can lift her off, but im gettin old and sore, so, front and rears will be going in when the build finally gets under way.

X1000 worsers again if its a low traction surface

I totally agree, I dont have lockers in my off road car, but only because i cannot get arbs for the LJ

My sierra has twin airs, as doesn my neighbours, but they are generally used only as a recovery aid.

I have auto lockers front and rear, mainly because my Zook is just a play toy these days. I would *love* to have ARBs both ends but just couldn't get approval from the Minister of War and Finance.

I agree with most of the posts on both sides of the fence here. Auto's have their negatives, but are a big improvement on having nothing too. Offroad I tend to run with passenger side locked in and driver's side out, and typically run around in 2WD Low. That way I'm doing most stuff in rear wheel drive (keeps a good challenge) but have 3WD available via the transfer, with no detraction to turning performance. If I get stuck and need full 4WD then it's just a matter of locking in the driver's hub.

Not perfect but works pretty well. i'm happy with the result for the price. Would never do it on a DD though - air all the way.

*edit: I don't agree that they're "rotten" or "horrible" - they are just a cheaper solution that has limitations. If you can accept the limitations and aren't driving it daily, then I think auto's are a valid choice.

2 things.

Will this locker fit in the rear jimny diff http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... ckers.html (the $209 one)?

Other thing, if i had the coin for a air leaker i would buy them, but at this stage i don't :) , but for now i want more traction and it is the cheapest form of gaining traction for me.

Id bet my left nut there was loctite.. as I put it together. Maybe the fact it was spinning around in oil at a fairly rapid rate the loctite is no longer visible. :helloo:

I might be talentless but mine holds a line(even with 2 autolockers) that's how Col got it straight up the Rutted Hill. But seriously this must be locker debate number 9999. If they were the same price there's no comparison and if air was available for mine I'd probably go air and spend the coin. At the end of the day they both get you the same place, just air is better to live with. Really though only the front one is at all noticeable and is a bitch if I attempt to go "fast" in high 4.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread.

But can anyone confirm the 1510# lock wrong will fit in the jimny rear diff?

Worked out what was causing the issues when i pulled it out, two of the pins were catching and not letting it unlock untill it had a motherload of force on it, i couldn't compress the two parts by hand... Sparten must not have very tight tolerances in there parts 8O . My front one works sweet.
I reckon the locker been so violent contributed to those bloody bolts comeing undone..

I have a lockrite. Only issue is the twisted spline but air lockers do that too, mugui snapped his axle with an ARB locker.

The ratcheting isn't hard on the parts. Mine free wheels gently and i can hardly hear it let alone feel it. it's when the locker jumps a tooth under load is when there is an issue and shock loads the system.

Alot of guys in sierras on here don't like them but I think it is a weight and size issue of the car.

Detroits would have to one of the nicer autolockers. I have been in plenty of cars fitted with them driven on the street.

Another vote for the lockrights. I'm running them front and rear on my vit and love em, they have made the car ridiculously more capable.

That said:
1) I'd still take air lockers any day of the week if I was rich.
2) My car isn't a daily driver.
3) Get them set up properly. There was a world of difference between me guesstimating the backlash, and having a diff shop do it.

Bang for buck wise they are awesome. Can get front and rears delivered from the US for a shade over $600AU total.

Can some one correct me but i thought auto lockers never unlocked
They locked both wheels to turn min of pinion speed but allowed one side to over run the pinion speed for cornering .
If that's true then a auto locker would be better suited to the front the arb.

That's pretty much how they work. Even when they do release the outside wheel they drive the inside wheel only and that alone resists steering. The front is always noticeable in 4wd with a lockright. But while a front is locked with an air locker the steering effect is much greater, that's when you turn it off, though sometimes when under load they don't unlock straight away.

Yes but on low traction surfaces ( dirt, mud etc) it will not ratchet as easily. So it acts like a locked airlocker anyway.

going from experience, and workin of competition vehicles,
detroits are stronger,
tho they are a litle annoying because the ratchet when turning under load, who cares,
having 1 in the front is still easy to turn, because u just back off turn the wheel and hit the power again, i have been in class 8 race cars running twin detroits and 35s never had a drama,
tho destroyed airlockers when running them constanlty in the back, more things to go wrong in an air locker

The only thing user selectable in an air locker is the switch on the dash, even when you flick the switch off if the diff is still under load then it will stay locked until that load is removed making it no better then an auto locker. As far as the comp cars go from the ones I have seen over here it would be about 60/40 in favour of the auto lockers, largely due to the fact they arent driven on road. I run autos front and rear with PS, my hubs are never unlocked and its always in 4WD and the loss of turning circle isnt noticeable and speeds of around 90 odd kph they never played up.

For a DD and with money to burn I would consider an air locker based purely on on road manners, for a comp truck weekend toy, autos all the way.

I like to drive worry and stress free on road. I also like predictable handling. I could not cruise the mountain fire road as fast as I do if I had an auto-locker in the diff.

For me , the ARB is the only way to go. You get to have both, a locked rig when you need it, and unlocked when you don't. How can it gt any better than that?

Flip ..... Now you have lockers
Flip....... Now you don't

What is better than having that choice at your fingertips?

The only con I see is the price, and with your dollar being so strong buying them from low range should be about half price for you guys. No better time to buy IMHO.

I've had a lockwrong in the rear for less than a week before I left the car behind, and I'm already sick of it on the road. Didn't get a chance to test it off-road, which may change the balance in my opinion, but so far just irritating!

Oh, and it came with a twisted Cromo axle! Bluddy comp trucks...

I recon most of the problem with lockrights is that most are set up wrong. U don't hear many proply saying they machined theirs to fit.
My mates got lockrights in his vit an u can't tell there in there. When I got mine done the guy f it it was to tight and bucked and kicked all over the shop. I took it back and he did something now it heaps better ,but not as good as the ones my mate did.

So what can be done to a lock wrong to make them ratchet, or freewheel better?

You would think so but it works out to be about 100 bucks cheaper than getting them locally

got a spartan locker in the rear of mine and will be getting one for my new sierra. put mine in myself and it was undrivable, clunky horror. took it back out and gave it to a diff specialist, $90 later put it back in and it is amazing. made a bit of noise for a few months but now its is only a very quiet ticking around corners. people in the car dont even notice it
