Hi everyone this is my first post. I have a 96 sierra and I've just been prepping to go to the cape. I did an oil change and swapped to 4wd to
lift a wheel on to a spare to give me space to collect the old oil.

Anyway, after that I made a big mistake and whilst the car was still in 1st gear, and the front wheel locks were on, I depressed the clutch and attempted to go from 4wd low range back in to 2wd. Well I never made it,
the 4wd>2wd gearstick has stopped (in neutral I think) and I have no gears at all. I change thru 1>5 without engaging any gear without using the clutch at all, I've totally screwed up!

Does anyone have any idea how I can get my car moving again?
Any help or tips gratefully appreciated.

Yeah if your transfer case is in neutral, you will have no drive.

You have actually stumbled upon a handy theft deterrent device!

Put your transfer case into 2wd.

Are you saying your Tcase is stuck? If so, try lifting the stick slightly as you change.

Take the transfer shifter out, you may find the shifter bush is worn out...

ok, well thanx for that reply i've learnt something now, my transfer case is in neutral! I'm such a dunce considering how far I've gone in me little machine!

Yeh my Tcase is definately stuck, I'm presuming it's stuck in neutral.
I've tried lifting it, no luck, I've also tried rolling the car a bit etc,
no luck there either.

lift it up with quite a bit of force but move it back to hi4 gently

or rip the stick out and get a new bush and you should be right to go

can I take out the stick from inside the cab and do the bush replacement from there?

Yep...... 2 boot's & a push down & turn retainer on the base of the stick..

Yes - it can be tricky but it can be done.

Dropping the transfer case out is also pretty easy.

also easy to drop on your head

shifter bush is easy to do though. i had a service manual next to me (didnt really need it though) and despite knowing bugger all about cars, took me a couple of minutes to do. can be done without removing the case easily enough.
