I did this mod a couple of years ago. Changed axle and diff housings to steel. fairly easy, you have to pull the axles out, be carefull not to damage the seals in the donor housing when you put the axles back or you will have an oil leak that you will only discover when it is all back together. Some oil on the seals before sliding axles in will help.

do you have to worry about changing the diff ratio's?

Ratios depend on what you are using it for, but make sure that the new diff is the same as the old one or the rear. You may have to swap over the crown wheel and pinion to do this.
