G'day fellas.

Have heard around the traps that webers are not very good on hills. My zook has a 4k motor so it has a 4k carby but anyone that has one will know that the secondary opening mechanism isn't exactly the best. So I was looking at a twin barrel weber but if they actually are crap on hills then I might have to look for something else. Is there any truth to this? Any ways to fix it?

Thanks.

Jackson.

mm bit left field but I put on a 180 holley (very similar to weber 32/36..few weeks back - took it out for a run yesterday and although the power increase is awesome ...hit a dune that was 45 degrees and I was stranded - stalled multiple times -

Needs to be turned around 90* and tuned better. My old weber would run all all but the most stupid angles. was as good as the stock carby i had.

So the way they mount the fuel bowl is on one side or something?

There is a monster thread on outerlimits about webers that i started a few years ago. everything you need to know is in it.

I ran several different 32/36 weber's with several different settings and tunes over two years. They really bring the suck off road.

One way they flood uphill, the other going down. I installed a fuel pump cut off to cut fuel when going downhill.
I was never so happy as when I bought a EFI conversion and installed it.

I will never run a weber again, maybe a CV or SU carb, but never a weber, ever.

Hey sky, you ever seen/heard of an adapter that mounts the weber 90 degrees to the intake manifold. This would make them on par with the stock carb off road.

I have not. I have only seen the ones that mount it either forward or reverse.

The problem would then be when you are off camber the fuel would pour down the throat from the float bowl vent.

I really think for price vs performance/reliability an SU, or CV carb is the way to go thee days. adapters are easily built a well.

I guess i also wanted to say that weber are finicky. Too much pull on the throttle arms, and the bores around the butterfly's wear. That cause a vacuum leak, and a sticky pot in the throttle.

If you tighten them up to much the base warps, again causing the throttle plate to wear into the side of the carb.

They need very low pressure, but very high volume to work right. The idle jets are also easily plugged up.

At this point, and with all I have learned I would pass on a weber even if it were free. I would rather deal with a US spec Hitachi carb and all the associated electronics than a weber, and tat i saying a LOT.

Ten year ago it was a decent option to a dead worn stock carb, but now there are so many more options, and some that are less expensive. IMHO the weber's days in off road are over. Now on road is a different story, but they are just not worth the headaches for offroad vehicles.

I did get mine to run decent, but they never did run "right" for an entire trail run. Elevation was also a very big stumbling block for me. Raising over 3000ft per trip required some extensive adjustment, and even jet changet at the trail head.

has anyone ever heard of any one running a small side draft weber like a 40 DCOE chocked & jetted down to suit the 1.3?

So side draft carbs don't suffer from angles?

Thanks for all this good stuff.

It's not really a conclusion since I put the question mark but old mate that's posted above me was gunna buy the two side draft ones and he said the webers were crap on angles so there had to be some reason he was gunna buy them.

A side draft with a centrally located fuel bowl, located directly under the throat will offer the best angle immunity eg: motorbike carbs

Hey Santos, I do recall you put up an awesome link to some yank site thread on carb performance in which they actually tested them on a dyno. Do you remember that one? Still got the link? It was a bloody good read with real figures to support it!

Would all Aisan carbs have the same base plate? How is the Sierra secondary activated?

Pretty much I wanna try get rid of this diaphram activation as mine is starting to go.

Yeah.. I am all about gettign as much out of these little Suzuki engines as possible ;D

I can tell you from personal experience a set of flat top High compression pistons in a 1.3 makes a BIG difference. If I hadn't stumbled on a 1.6 for $300 I would have been happy with the slightly built 1.3.

I don't know what your inlet manifolds look like, but there's alot of power to be pulled out of our carby manifolds. They are more restrictive than a tiny carb. I am not surprised a carb swap can near double the HP, I bet half of that increase is getting rid of the stock manifold.

i have a webber on my sierra. its almost brand new and although i havent had anhthing to compare it to. i hate it. its pissing me of to no end. it uses to much fuel, it stalls at idle, and although i havent expirienced it myself yet. i have no doubts that the POS stalls on hills. i have a standard carby aswell but it needs a rebuild. am seriously considering swaping both for a recon stock carby and putting up with the lack of power

anyone have any idears. im prety sure the last owner pulled it from the box direct from webber and bolted it strait on. runs with the standard airbox. POS is pissing me of to the max.
im still on my bloody l plates coz i cant do any practice to sit my test beacuse my car wont bloody idle.

ssssierra go get it tuned... over fueling = too much fuel use and stalling at idle, then when you finally hit a hill report back to us.

Been there.
I had the speedo cable die on the morning of my test seven years ago.
Did the test in a sporty 4age toyota with a new clutch... 3 point turn was a nightmare. failed. fixed the speedo and and passed in my suzuki.

i just spent 300bucks at my mechanic getting the POS tuned and having the dizzy replaced (that was not including new dizzy) aprently it was running bad coz the addaptor plate for the webber was a lil bent and it was sucking air in under the carby. 1hours worth of driving and now the POS wont idle again.

and the airfilter stinks of petrol
