So finally got myself a cheap ass 9500lb electric winch to replace my well worn and very time/energy consuming peanut handwinch and hopefully have it installed before I head up north for the wet season

Needing some inspiration in the form of how peps have mounted there winches weather it be in a bar or in a custom made cradle. So if you would kindly share some pics and info on your setup that would be great!

My winch is mounted into an ARB bar, but something to consider is where you mount your solenoid box. I have mounted my aftermarket solenoid box on the firewall on the left hand side of the below pic, behind the battery... And i have an in-cab winch in/out switch just behind the indicator stalk, mounted on the dash.... hope that helps Dan.

I will be aiming to mount my solenoid box inside and away from engine heat and dirt and grime etc.

Would you have a pic of how the winch is mounted? I haven't actually seen a winch mounted close up on a sierra yet.

My winch is a 6000 pound premier. Because of this we had to do some booty fab on the bar to make it all work... It's really hard to take good shots, so I hope you understand whats going on...

Not sure If this is what you want
9500lb winch is mounted with four bolts with the fairlead bolted above the bottem winch bolts
Had to redrill two new holes for the fairlead

Mounts inside the chassis rails, then again around the round tube between each chassis rail.

Winch then mounts flat on winch centre.

I'm trying to find a photo of built4thrashings which I liked too.. He had pipe through the x-member and then the bar held back onto that with U bolts and a brace, as well as std mounts.

Yes, just 4 bolts through the ends of the chassis rails with crush tubes as well.
It has proved strong enough so far, although I feel it should have additional mounts...

Add something that goes around the crossmember and sleeve the inside of the crossmember

Well since this has been bumped back up I may as well dump in how I ended up mounting my winch. Ripped from my build thread:

Started a winch install finally! No more mega hand winching for me woooo!

first step find some thick wall pipe and jam into chassis


Then scourer the back yard to find some steel. Found this! 8mm angled bracket that was being used as the shed ramp!


Chop it a bit and make it fit like this. Over the cross member. Trim front clip for winch



Bolt through cross member and tube with 10mm HT bolts


Check if 9500lb winch fits



It''s a pretty snug fit and doesn't protrude much. Need to throw on a few more brackets and chop the bullbar to fit. Bullbar will only sit around 10mm further out than stock

Alloy bar with the winch and new mounts has been moved 10mm forward but around ~15mm upward which has given me better approach than before!


Still got a bit to do but it's nearly all sorted!


Final winch support cradle. It's a 2 piece bolt together design for ease of mounting the bloody thing. Only welding required was the side supports to stop fore/aft flexing.


Finished cradle installed with a lick of paint.




Additional mounting using the bullbar as part of a stressed member for lateral support.


Fairlead mounted and done!


Decided against installing the solenoid box out front above the winch in all the weather and crap so mounted it underbonnet via a bent alloy bracket. All wiring mounted by stainless p-clamps to keep it neat.

has anyone ever seen a mid-mounted wich in a sierra? I've not been able to find anything after a bit of an interweb search.

And also for the in cab switch I'd recommend it be next to something solid you can hold on to if you have a bit of speed to your winch. Nothing worse than shooting up a hill with a fast winch, while steering one handed and trying to keep the switch pressed in and not be jerky on and off it. The windscreen bar of my cage was great for this purpose.
