Ha Fooled you all already. you all thought this was another Jimny thread!


So anywho now that i've had my fun. My LWB Vit, has developed a wobble in the steering. So far this is what i've tried

-New Inner & Outer Tierods
-New Draglink
-Wheel Balance / Alignment
-New Wheel Bearings.
-Flushed all the old P/s fluid out for new stuff

Currently Running 31 x 11.5 R15 (rims are -23) Mickey Thompson Baja Claws on a 3" Calmini Suspension setup with a 2" Body Lift.

I was thinking about pulling the Steering box out and putting a Seal kit through it

as its the only thing i can think of thats causing this. and if that doesn't fix it maybe a RTC Dampner ( i've been advised that this should be a last resort as it tends to mask the problem rather than fix it )

Any other ideas?

what struts are you running?

have you checked to see if there is much run out on the rims?

Have you got access to stock rims/tyres to trial

The shake is it through the car or the steering wheel
Through the car could be a uni ??

No its just through the wheel, and no i don't have access to stock rims / tyres.

Im not quite sure what you mean by this, could you explain further please

what struts are you running? eg OME, Calmini, Ironman etc... as in one could be seized.

run out is the wobble in the rim left to right/up & down when spinning it. Axial=side to side and Radial=up and down

Struts are : Dobinson 2" Lifted in the front and Calmini ones in the rear. they aren't seized i just checked them.

and from what i can tell everything looks normal in the "run out" department

What width are the rims? 11.5 is a pretty wide tyre for a hairdressers car

they are on an 8" Rim.

Just so i've said it, the problems only occured in the last few weeks, have been running this combo of parts fine for the last 3months

Have you rotated wheels front to rear? What's the wear like on them? Even?

you'll need to measure run out with a dial indicator, you're eye probably wont pick it up unless it's mega bent or you have super human bionic vision.

could quite well be a slight buckle in the rim or an egged tyre, i know my speedy desert rat rims had a fair bit of runout brand new before even having tyres fitted.

Also might be a good time to mention that she is still lifting one of the front wheels when you come round a corner and give it a boot full... thinking the rear coils might be a smidgen soft...

I was thinking of maybe putting another set of coils in the rear with a 2" Lift and getting a 1" Spacer... has anyone else had troubles with the coils being too soft?

Mine are way too soft too, especially when packed for camping bottoms out over hi-way bumps pretty bad.

Have your front tyres scolloped?? As in uneven were it's happend in my mates cruser do a rotation and see if that helps

At what speed does it shake at
Slow speed around 25-50 kmh could be rim/tyre runout
Above that could be balance maybe lost a wheel weight
The exception being a scalloped tyre
As above try the rotation

Will definitely try the wheel rotation, all the tyres are pretty well rooted, just saving up now for the new set now... Was also thinking about getting some Smaller rims ( 15 x 7 ) still with a big neg offset though...

cant decide whether to go 235 / 75's or just man up with the 31x10.5's.

i think the 11.5's are a bit wide as they scrub on the chassis rail even with the massive offset.
