I might ask this stupid question nice and early in the day - I can't get my flares/guards off. I've soaked the screws/bolts/nuts in WD40 overnight but using a screwdriver i'm just stripping the heads. Before I sheer off any threads permanently into the guards - what's the best way to get em off?

Buy yourself a impact driver and smack the crap out of it. works 90% of the time and for the ones that are already stuffed a hammer and chisel.

Those flare bolts are a pita. I've only ever cut the heads off with a grinder and put new screws in.

Its because the threads face upwards, water goes in the threads, rust.
The flare sheet panels are too soft to hit them with anything..They will just bend with the force of a chisel on the bolt. You will have to be 'lucky'

So you've already got rust in the floor, These arnt going to be much better.

Yeah - getting no purchase on the bolt with a chisel - flare flange bends just bends with the impact.

I dunno if it's worth me buying an impact drill, i'd only use it once every five years... I might try the panel beaters or tyre shop and see if they'll have a go

Nothing but drilling them out worked for me, rusted at the back of the screws as Bluesuzy said.

Drill head off, vice grips to pull out from the back

They way I've attacked them.

1. Impact driver. If it strip the star out of the head. try -

2. Use cutoff wheel to make a slot in the head. Use Impact driver flat bit attachment.

99% sucsess rate.

3. Grind off head. drill and tap new thread.

Replace with stainless hex bolts and use locktite 771.

Get an impact screwdriver and then whilst you're hitting it with a hammer keep turning it (simultaniously)...you can also use a normal screwdriver too or just get what TZAR said

I have found that cutting a slot across the head with a thin blade in the angle grinder and then a whack with an impact screwdriver (above) works every time - no exceptions - The combination of the heat from the grinder and better purchase with the slot blade seems to be the answer.

Drill through the heads with a 6mm drill bit and they just pop off then vice grips from the back once there off

Alot better imo

Nylon lock nuts with a dab of threadlocker would be the brest bet.

What a freakin mission!!! 10 hours later I have 4 flares off, no snapped off bolts, and i'm a couple of tools richer Every single one of the carnts were seized.

Even though the guards were chokkas with mud, not a single spot of rust to be found. Winning

You should see how many empty .22LR cartridges I have floating around in various panel gaps and down the air vents ... a screw or two is nothing!!
