Hi,
The missus just bought a new car, and while we were at the dealer i noticed the lack of jimnys....

Apparently they are no longer able to be complied in any Australian state as of the end of this year!

He said that suzuki have no plans of filling it's spot with anything else.

Can everyone stop rolling jimnys now? We don't want them to run out.

This is old news, how did we not know?
I wonder how this will effect imports? They should still pass the "already partialy compliant rules", but I wonder if you will be allowed to import them if they are manufactured >2012.

Um we did know its been on here before, not sure other states will bring in the law as quick as victoria's all new cars must have traction control.

They have had a good run. There was a distinct lack of jimnys since about June this year, but just recently my local dealer is now fully stocked up with about 4 or 5, but they are askign waaaaaayyy too much. like 23- 24K. You'd have to be off your head to buy a jimny brand new, but hey, it's keeping the used prices high so no complaints.

meh, I might just import my current Jimny when I come back to and convert it, get other engineering stuff done while Im at it. Im sure not many of the ones you guys roll will need the dash, getting a power steering box might be even harder now, but I can probably try and get a LHD highlux one from here before I come back.

My understanding of the rules is that vehicles without stability control cannot be registered in Victoria if they have a build date after 2010 and for the rest of Australia it takes effect in 2012. Unless the manufacturer has sought an exemption they cannot be registered and this will mean any vehicle that you directly import as well. So unless Suzuki add stability control they will be withdrawn from sale in Australia totally from next year. If you live in Victoria then a 2010 is the last model that can be registered even in it comes from another state and for all other states it is 2011 which is the last model that you will see.

The dealer said it was for the compliance date after 2011 for all of aus, cars complied after 2010 without stability control couldn't be sold NEW in vic but second hand is fine. He said you can register an aus complied one in vic even if it was complied after 2010, it is just illegal for dealers to stock them. unfortunately he said that suzuki are not going to add stability control or fill the hole with anything similar...

Someone on Suzuki's Failbook page asked about it, and Suzuki Replied:

"The Jimny Sierra will not be sold in the state of Victoria in 2012, but it will still be available in every other Australian state. This is because the state of Victoria requires that all passenger vehicles and SUVs have standard ESC (Electronic Stability Control) since January 2011. In every other state, ESC will be mandatory for all passenger vehicles and SUVs only from November 2013.

Here is the extract from the Vicroads site.

"Electronic Stability Control for interstate vehicles

If you moved to Victoria from interstate after 1 January 2011, and your vehicle has a compliance/identification plate date of January 2011 or after, it must have electronic stability control fitted to be registered in Victoria.

This ESC requirement applies to passenger cars, off-road passenger vehicles, and forward-control passenger vehicles e.g. passenger vans.

However, if your vehicle has been registered in another state or territory for 12 months or more, then it can be registered in Victoria, even if it does not have electronic stability control. You will need documentation to show that your vehicle has been registered for 12 months or more."


So this means that Royce is correct and you can register a 2011 Jimny in Victoria as long as it has been regsitered interstate for 12 months or longer.

Now if you want to import a post 1988 vehicle into Victoria you must have owned it overseas for 12 months or more. Without reading all the details this will make it difficult to personally import a Jimny from overseas. It seems like the 2011 Jimny's will be the last we see in Australia

Just a quick parts count for me...

2 broken front axles
Several broken front CV's
1 destroyed front housing and Right axle
2 destroyed rear R&P's
3 damaged rims (at least)
1 destroyed RH guard
1 destroyed RH wing mirror
1 destroyed AC comp front end
1 damaged AC fan
1 broken clock spring
1 complete left hand side damaged
1 broken transfer case mount
3 damaged front shocks
1 broken engine mount
2 broken/bent radius arms
1 destroyed clutch

Was down at the Suzuki dealer today and they advised that Jimny parts for body and mechanical will be available for at least another 10 years. Some of the accessories may be discontinued earlier.

and shipped to most of the world
parts will be no problem really.

unless you want them fast...

buying direct from japan would properly be quicker

And if I wanted a bingo car, I wouldn't have bought a Jimny. The only way to find a car's limits is to test it and test it!
