:helloo: guys,

I'm not sure how it happened but i went to start my car today and it wouldn't start. Spent a few hour's looking around the engine bay looking for a loose/broken wire or blown fuse. After a bit more looking i seen that some how the main winch power cable had been crushed and was arcing out on the body (hence the car not starting). So after i disconnected that, i hooked some jumper leads on to the car hey presto it started.....then it stalled...tried jump starting it again....stalled again.

Any way after a few revs it would idle with-out stalling....problem solved....no wrong it died again once i tried to turn my head lights on. So i hooked the volt meter on whilst running and i was getting 14.4 volt's at the battery while idling. So i then turned the car off to see how many volt's the battery had after running the car for 10mins....5 volt's :?. I then thought it maybe the alternator, so i jump started the car again, once running i disconnected the battery and the car continued to run, so it can't be the alternator right?

So what do i need to look for now to figure out while the battery isn't getting charge?

Can i safely rule out it's NOT alternator?

Where to start? :(

Cheers,

Andrew

dude your batt is shagged either way. get a newwy and report back. Dont connect your winch yet. Your elecs are fine if you managed to get it going so dont stress about that.

a nice fat 8 gauge winch cable would give your battery a good fryin. 5 volts after 10 minutes with no draw means you have dead cells, it should at least have 10.5V. be careful taking it out, ive seen these things cook so bad that when they've been lifted they've cracked stripping the paint off the engine bay.
i think i might put isolation on my winch power because of whats happened here!

Yep, what the others have said, you have fried your battery... you are very lucky the Jims have a small battery... if it had been a big one, with more amps/CCA behind it, you may have had some chared black remains left... is there is a fuseable link/circuit breaker/isolator switch, on your winch power cable, sounds like its straight from the battery... :?

hay on second thought for only $11 US mabie a RFFA500 might be worth it, its a 2 pack of 500 amp fuses. they take 10 seconds to blow, but that's better then melting insulation of ya heavy copper. their a rockford fosgate fuse so they should be pretty good. just not sure how a ceramic fuse would handle vibration...

I had all the winch cables together so they couldn't move but from the trip to Mundaring the other night, all the vibrations had caused one of the cables to move. Then some stage during the trip i must of hit my bar on something and the cable was jammed between bar & the body crushing the cable. NFI idea how the bar moved tho, i can't remember hitting any thing that hard :? .

I don't think you will have the problem of the ARB moving...shitty xrox bar :x maybe it's time to change bar's :P
