Hey guys, just wondering if there was a way of telling the difference between a standard OEM replacement clutch and the heavy duty just by looking at it? Bought what I thought was a HD clutch but it has a silver cover and on the Exedy site it's says silver is the OEM standard version. Is this right? I'm no mechanic as you can tell but any help would be great.

Should say "sport's tuff" on the box, & box should be bright colored to..

Brisbane brake depot is where i bought it off Ebay. They got back to me saying that the warehouse has been doing this a fair bit to them lately so will see.

Not all the time.. I have fitted a few and it seems that they only paint the more common one .. Falcon, commodore, skylines etc etc.

Yep same, have a pink sports tuff in my sierra and my GTi, but a bloke from work put one in his pajero and was just metal colour. Maybe exedy are beginning to be tight-arses with production costs?

Thanks for all your help guys. The seller agrees that its not what it should be and are going to replace it. It puts me behind as to where i wanted to be but all good as long as its sorted. Cheers again.

its very hit and miss as to who gets a pink one, I would fit it

I reckon exedy HD in a sierra are trouble free but they dont need em if your gearing is good

the extra travel needed to make them work makes them terrible in a Vitara, that doesnt really have the travel spare

Alot of people talk about the HD clutches braking clutch cables hence why alot of people don't like them and prefer to use the standard

Or are they just perpetuating another internet myth because they read it somewhere?


If anyone has personally snapped one, I would like to know:
1) Where the cable snapped
2) How old was the cable
3) Was it installed correctly and by whom
4) Under what circumstances it snapped, eg. off-road, in traffic etc..



For the record, my HD clutch feels much lighter and smoother than the standard clutch

If the pressure plate is collapsing it would feel better....

first (original to the car) in traffic going to work
second (Suzisport supplied) month later in light traffic
third (new genuine suzuki) month later, cant rememeber when

I then changed to a sierra cable, new none genuine
was still bad, a few weeks later I pulled the HD clutch out and fitted a standard excedy, that sierra cable snapped 2.5 years later

Stekky, there was nothing wrong with the old one.
I just decided to replace it with a HD while I was doing the engine swap

I also replaced the clutch cable with a new one from Suzistore.
The old cable was fine, but old. The new one looks nice and new, but doesn't appear to be as well made.
We'll see how long it lasts then.

Royce, how and where did you cables snap? Did the cable itself part?
Or did the fittings on the end fail?

all the ones that went quickly the outer cable failed where it bends around the bottom hose
the one that lasted snapped the inner at the firewall fitting, this was more from using a sierra cable in a late Vitara, the firewall angle is wrong for it

Mine snapped 1 cable and stretched another to the piont that it could not be adjusted any more. I can't remember where it broke, but it was a cable failure, not an end failure.

HD clutch came out, STD clutch went back in.

Thanks Royce. Now that I have some actual reasons for them snapping, I know what to look out for


Fatzook, any idea why there was so much pressure on your cable?
Did you have it routed through the engine bay as per factory? Any tight turns that may affect the movement of the cable inside the sheath?
Any crap or corrosion on the GB input shaft affecting the movement of the clutch release bearing?
