Hey

I have a suzuki sierra JX 91 model and I see that my steering damper is old and stuffed.

What is the cheapest place to buy a new damper for my car and where. Also what are some good brands?

Anything bigger than the std one, I'm not a fan of the RTC's but others love em.

I have used Gabriel and Old Man Emu (ARB) dampers on Sierras,
very happy with both.
This was a while ago, may be more options now.

Standard one works fine if you wheel bearings, castor etc etc are all up to stratch.

your cheapest ever option is to just take the old one off and run it without one... mine steered so much better once i took my shagged one off, and there was zero difference in bump steer.

Paid 165 for a tough dog rtc from OL. Seen them on ebay for 220. Didnt make a huge difference but keeps it from wandering.

Yeh it sits on 100 fine with no wobble. I can even let go of the streeing wheel and go straight with out pulling to one side

yeah mine was buggered so it steered much nicer... i dont have power steer to reduce bump steer, i just have arms of steel (lol). I do have lots of caster though so no wobbles.

My Sierra needed a steering damper,
untill fitting power steering.
Then it was fine.
I'm guessing power steering has a type of fluid damper effect.

If you have dramas without a steering dampener then you having issues elsewhere like poor castor, worn wheel bearings, worn tie rod ends, or even loose U bolts.

I've run mine with the 34's and no steering dampener and only ever rarely get bump steer on the nastiest of pot holes and I know my tie rod ends aren't the best. With a stock dampener that masks that problem enough. Any more need than the stock dampener and you have problems that need attention. Believe me, I used to run a RTC steering dampener and have horrible wheel bearings etc. Once the RTC broke (and it will) my car was dangerous to drive. I attended to the problems in the front end and fitted some Chromo's and a locker at the same time and drove for quite some time after that without a dampener at all. Only just recently fitted a stock one, but didn't really need it.

SPOA, lux leaves, WT diffs, High Steer - the high steer is a little longer than the factory arm too, so more leverage there making the steering lighter (marginal).

6-10mm more on a steering arm is hardly going to affect bump steer though, and a 31" tyre is a lot of leverage on the steering to induce bump steer compared to a 26" tyre.

caster is irrelevant because as pointed out above - if you've got the wobbles then something else is broken and just being masked.

IMO the OP should try running without for a day or so and if it feels ok then just run with it... its free and easy.

If it's already buggered tho, he'd be used to driving it that way, so he won't notice the difference, if he fit's a new one he will notice a HUGE friggin difference

a damper wont do anything for REAL bumpsteer, only making the draglink flatter will

For everyone says you dont need it, you might not need it but its not he answer, mine only wobbled once I fitted power steer and took the damper off, a calmini damper on the diff (I agree the stock setup is a fairly stupid design) was the only thing that fixed it without altering my suspension to something I didnt want to have

huh go figure - i always thought bump steer was the effect of a rut/rock/obstacle hitting the tyre and trying to rip the steering wheel out of your hands. (ie: a bump causing the car to steer).
