how do i clean out the fuel tank? what should i use?

i put a handful of small lead fishing weights in mine with a little bit of fuel swished it round poured it out then rinsed with fuel and metho.

I usually use a few handfuls of 10mm blue metal gravel.
Nice and sharp so it really gets all the rust.

also works well for cleaning out grungy radiator overflow bottles as long as they're not too heat damaged & are fragile/brittle.

Do you shake it dry or wet? I've read about guys flushing it with water is that the right thing too do after?

I shake it with gravel and a few litres of metho.
Rinse out with petrol.

Do not use water.....ball bearings or blue metal is the go....leave abit of petrol in the tank when you do it and then re-rinse with petrol again

It is basalt not steel...

I know what it is but a rock can still spark, I thought that was why lead was used as it's soft and doesn't spark.

I tried all of the above. Then went to wreckers and got new tank lol gave up changing fuel filters and conking out at the lights

Jas too restart after emptying and blowing the lines clean just sit on the start whilst pumping accelerator?

In a carby car you can remove the supply hose from the fuel pump and pressurise the tank to blow fuel through then reconnect and crank until the float bowl is full enough to start. Or.. just crank it.
EFI: When you turn the ignition on, the pump will run for 2 seconds or so. Turn the key on and off a couple of times and it should have fuel up and start.

i did all that but it now dosnt want to idle iv takin it for a drive and everythin but wont idle

A few people told me they use rocks in their tanks.

I just used lead because its what i had handy and it was only a precautionary clean rather than a fix.

You probably have a bit of crap blocking the idle jet.

Sometimes you can fix it by:
: removing air hat
: start engine
: rev crap out of it
: while holding the throttle open, place a rag over carby to seal it so it can't suck air
: remove the rag just before engine stalls.
: repeat.

Otherwise remove the carby and underneath the float bowl are two nuts. Remove them and you'll see the 2 jets.

engine stalls with out me doing anything any way but will give it a go and see what happends
