Yeah thanks, I saw that one.

Is there a model that comes without the drum brake?

Nope, but it bolts off & isn't an integral part of the case.

Is there a drive flange behind it? Or will I need to fab one.

Also, how many bikini models will I fit on the ute tray if I install a PTO? Lol

Dunno.

But you essentially get a 4speed case. I would have absolutely NO use for 8.9:1 reduction in low/low. At 7000rpm Top speed in 5th would be 30km/h. 1st would be 7km/h 8O

They have different useable low range options. But the 1:1 high range is no good to you.

Would you really consider that much coin on something with pretty average duties?

No. The underdrive would use the only PTO outlet on the case. I'd rather use the PTO to drive something I need..... Like a log splitter for camping Armsup Or a hydraulic winch, Or a water cannon to soak the bikini girls on the tray

I'm going to have a look at 2 LT230's tomorrow. If one of them has the correct serial number it will be coming home with me.

There are 2 main types of LT230, earlier ones were LT230R with roller bearings (and thrust bearings) on the intermediate shaft, and LT230T with tapered roller bearing intermediate shaft. My Defender 130 is '95 and ie the "T". It is also 1.41 : 1 high. Been a few years since I've had mine apart but the main thing to wear out is the thrust bearings behind the planetary gears in the diff. Pretty sure the 130s all were 1.4 but the manual I have in front of me isn't too specific in terms of what ratio is in what, but it seems the 90 and Disco were 1.222 and the 110 was 1.41.

Found this web site last night by accident (looking for something rather unrelated)...
Might be useful when/if you need to rebuild one

I was just going to use the sierra transfer case behind a J20>Aw4>SierraTC>70sDiffs>35s on my next build..
Should be similar to Dank's Rig for power, he's broken other things, not the transfer case..
Seems they j20>37-40s on lux or bigger diffs, but just with the uprated output shaft on the transfer case..

Can I ask why its not good enough? I might need convincing.

Thanks 3cyl and H-S.

neofitou: Its simple maths mate. The sierra came out with 45kw at the flywheel. The J20 has just over twice that. Asking ANY gearbox to handle double the power/ torque is a big ask. Yes, there are some gearboxes out there that can, and regularly do handle this power, but if you look at the design brief that suzuki followed when making the sierra, big power and torque were never a consideration.

The shafts, bearings and teeth are all very small, and the gear face is quite narrow. Add some reduction gears into the mix, and some of these attributes become worse still.

I just think its a little unrealistic to expect the light weight sierra transfer to hold the power and torque of a J20. Sooner or later it WILL let you down. Driving style should also be considered I guess...... I like to lean on my cars, always have, always will. So chances are that my ute will see larger than legal tow loads from time to time, as well as the daily torture you are forced to put a vehicle through when it has tripple the factory power

Call the LT230 insurance.

They are a pretty weighty transfer, with the centre diff and also that they have 5 gears compared to the 4 in other units. I like the shift action and the low range without difflock is useful for maneuvering trailers on bitumin.

Cheers looking for

25D
34D
43D
57D.

Also need the centre diff. Some disco's between 2000-2005 didn't have a CDL I'm told.

Any there would most likely be late Rangie classic or series 1 Disco, all lockable but probably 1.2. Can't hurt to check though.

How are you going with this Fatzook?

The LT230 has 3.321:1 low as standard in ALL cases. AND you can get gear reduction for them (Maxidrive)

It seems they don't make the reduction gears anymore?

Maxidrive died years ago. MR Automotive took over maxidrive sales, but NFI what happened with production.

Ashcroft on the UK sell gears. And everything else you could need for the LT230.
